I was about to post this in today's CC thread until I released that this deserved a separate thread of its own, and that is why I have now started this thread although this isn't exactly the sort of thread which I would want to be starting in what is supposed to be our "winter".

I was doing some research and discovered that the highest maximum temperature in December which I could find for here in Edinburgh was 15.8°C as recorded on 17 December 2015.

However, the observations at Edinburgh Gogarbank for today show today's highest temperature so far to be 16.3°C and since that is always either the same as or lower than the official maximum temperature, today's maximum temperature here in Edinburgh is likely to be even higher than that.

In addition to that, I have found this  reddit post which is showing that a temperature of 16.6°C has actually been recorded at that same station with that reading presumably coming from one of the intermediate 10 minute readings from the raw BUFR data (weathers.com only shows the main hourly readings). This would suggest that today's official maximum temperature there is likely to be even higher than that.

If my findings on the highest ever December temperature here in Edinburgh are correct, today is likely to go down as our warmest December day on record by quite a bit and at the very least, it is likely that a new date record  will be set at all three of my local stations here in Edinburgh.

I would also expect some other temperature records to be broken by the exceptionally warm air which is being brought in by Storm Bram, so I have started this thread to see if there are any other locations in the UK where this is likely to happening, and also to allow others to report any exceptionally high temperatures which occur at any other time as time.

If we ever get any cold weather during that complete non-event which is this so-called "winter", this thread could easily be extended to cover any exceptionally low temperatures which occur but for now, the main issue is the exceptionally high temperatures which we are experiencing just now.

The model output has always suggested that we would see some exceptionally mild weather today, but I don't think that anyone was expecting any records to be broken with that, otherwise I'm sure that another member of this forum would already have started this thread well in advance of that actually happening.

Carlisle had an hourly reading of 16.7c at 4pm, might have peaked higher

Carlisle hit 16.7c at 16z though - so the date record has at least been equalled

It got up to just a little over 14c here yesterday, despite the gloom and wet.

In any case, that certainly at a more local level, made it our warmest December day on record here in Edinburgh.

That is yet another high temperature record to add to the ever growing list of high temperature records and although we can't blame climate change for one single event like this, I have to say that this is extremely concerning in that regard.

Just this morning, I was watching the replay on YouTube of the Met Office's weekly livestream which they put out on various social media outlets including YouTube every Friday and as a part of that, there is also a quiz which consists of five different questions which may or may not be weather related.

In this week's quiz, the recent event here in Edinburgh which I mentioned above, gave rise to our warmest December day on record came up as the very first question and in that one, you had to guess the correct value for that from a number of different values.

The correct answer of course, was listed as answer 'c' in their list of possible answers and was 16.6°C as I reported as that highest temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank in various threads on this forum (although they didn't mention the actual name of that particular station in this instance).

Aiden McGivern had the task of answering that question and did so correctly. In giving out the answers at the end, Annie Shuttleworth (the other co-presenter of this particular livestream who made up and asked this week's questions) corrected me by saying that the previous record for here in Edinburgh was actually 16.1°C as set all the way back in around 1941.

Since the above recent temperature was warmer than that previous record though, she did agree with me that Edinburgh did indeed, experience its warmest December day on record just recently with the all time record being beaten at all of the stations in Edinburgh.

Even without any tweets or the usual stuff, this is enough to mean that this particular day was confirmed by the Met Office as our warmest December day on record here on record.

Hopefully, we won't get too many more days like that this winter but we are in a very mild spell just now and with that, this thread could well become very busy again in the next few days in particular.
