Very much going to be a one hit wonder, but most of the models are going for lows of -10 tonight across the north of Scotland, with the lowest temperatures expected quite late - say around 0800 or 0900 tomorrow. The exception as always is the Met Office - the raw data for both Global and UKV is going for -19C, but that doesn't seem plausible given the short lead-in and lack of pre-existing pools of cold air.

Some of the required ingredients are in place: fresh snow cover, decreasing winds and clearing skies, but the boundary level winds don't really drop below about 10 knots until tomorrow morning, so my guess is this will not be an unusually cold one. But always interesting to watch unfold!

I don't know about elsewhere in the UK, but the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is down to around -6°C as I write, which makes last night our coldest night of the autumn so far by quite a considerable amount.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Not quite what this thread was intended for but a really interesting low max temp was recorded yesterday.

Scolton Country Park in the far west of Pembrokeshire had a max of 1.4c yesterday - it was a whisker away from being the coldest max temp in the whole country (1.1c at Ravens nest high in the North York Moors).

I wonder how often that's happened given it's coastal location. I wouldn't be surprised to see it be a November recorded for the site.

Currently living at roughly 65m asl North of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Formerly of, Birdlip, highest village in the Cotswolds and snow heaven in winter; Hawkinge in Kent - roof of the South downs and Isles of Scilly, paradise in the UK.

Lowest temperature from the official network appears to be -11.7C at Loch Glascarnoch. However the PWS networks have picked up lower values; widespread -12 to -14 in Strathdon and Strathspey. One station east of Nethybridge recorded -17.6C, although it's quite an outlier and the next coldest is about -15C.

The pools of cold air will dissipate today as the fronts move in from the west, so there will be no repeat tonight.
