Spring 2025 was exceptionally dry here as it was across much of the UK with all three spring months being drier than average but although we didn't get our first recorded rainfall of May until just about the very last week of that month, May 2025 actually ended up on a fairly wet note which was enough to make that our wettest month of the spring overall.

Now, we have entered into the start of the meteorological summer and the question now being asked is whether the much wetter end to May 2025 means that our general weather pattern has now flipped to a much wetter one, or whether the. dry weather returns as we get further into this month and into this summer.

We're coming into the time of year now when people like to go on their summer holidays and for these people, the definition of what makes up a decent summer is that it should be warmer than average, wetter than average and sunnier than average. Because of that, it would be just like the thing if our weather has now flipped into a much wetter pattern although this does at least mean that in terms of any actual rainfall being reported on here, this thread should be a bit busier to begin with at least, than other similar threads for other recent months. This is after all, the very place for reporting those all important rainfall totals for this month in your particular location.

However, all of this relatively wet weather has come after what has been a very long dry dry spell and for here in Edinburgh, we have not actually had a single wetter than average month overall since May 2024. This means that for many of us, the current wetter spell might not come anywhere near to fully alleviating any water scarcity concerns which might still be around. Furthermore, those water scarcity concerns will only get worse once again if and when we end up going back into a drier pattern of weather once again, especially as we get further into this summer.

For those reasons, I will continue to post the weekly water scarcity reports which SEPA release during this month and anyone can if they wish, report any data relating to that on a technical aspect on this thread such as groundwater, river or reservoir levels.

This week's water scarcity report has been issued by SEPA but before I come onto that, I can report that for Edinburgh Gogarbank, the latest rainfall total as at 2:40pm BST (13:40 UTC) this afternoon was 12.8 mm for this month (18.6 % of the 1991-2020 June average), 12.8 mm for this summer (5.9 % of the 1991-2020 summer average) and exactly 200.0 mm for this year (25.5% of the 1991-2020 annual average).

The number of rain days for Edinburgh Gogarbank as at that same time was 3 for this month (26.9% of the 1991-2020 June average), 3 for this summer (8.9% of the 1991-2020 summer average) and 38 for this year (27.7% of the 1991-2020 annual average).

Meanwhile and as that same time once again, there has been 1 dry day this month and this summer so far, but 92 dry days this year at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

With all of that in mind though, this week's water scarcity report from SEPA is very mixed this week because although there has been some further rainfall in the last week, there are some a number of locations which are still not getting anything like enough rainfall to get them out of the very serious situation which the very dry spring produced.

The main beneficiaries from this week's rainfall has been the west of Scotland which has gained the most from that. Consequently, a number of areas in the west of Scotland have been downgraded from early warning status as regards to water scarcity to normal status with the Shetland Islands being downgraded from alert status to normal status. In addition to that, there are also a number of areas in the west of Scotland which have been downgraded from alert status to early warning status with those areas including SW Scotland which not so long ago, had been threatened with a possible upgrade to significant water scarcity status had the spring drought gone on for any longer than it did.

The big issue here though comes from the fact that a lot of the last week's rainfall has been showery in nature with a notable rain shadow effect which means that there are still some areas which aren't getting enough rain just now to prevent a further deterioration in the overall situation. The worst areas in that regard are in the east of Scotland with a couple of areas being upgraded from alert status to moderate water scarcity status and for those areas which are currently in the moderate water scarcity status, there is a warning that at least one of those areas could be upgraded to significant water scarcity status if the situation doesn't improve there very soon.

More rainfall is forecast in the coming week but a lot more rain needs to fall with that rainfall occurring more consistently across the whole of Scotland if we are to completely recover from the overall water scarcity situation.

Have recorded 19 mm of rain during the night here at Folkestone, certainly gave the nearby nightclub 3 am closing time drunks a good wash. There's still today's showery activity - including a spell of "back edge cold front" squally rain this evening - yet to come. Might reach 30 mm (over an inch) before the day is out, good for the grass and make trees big and strong.

Another pulse of heavy rain this evening has bumped up today's total to 27 mm, pretty close to my forecast 30 mm. That should be it for quite a few days, time to look forward to Summer slowly returning in the next few days.

Unsurprisingly nothing dramatic here. Couple of mm early morning followed by 6mm of steady light to moderate rain early evening and as the last wave went through another 0.5mm giving a total of 8.4mm for the day.

23mm so far but the outlook after the next few days looks pretty dry as the month goes on. Could do with a good soaking before then with Friday night looking to offer the best chance. Thursday's rain looks like missing us here, which has very often been the case this year.
