Conclusion

March 2025 was a warmer than average month overall with a below average number of official air frosts.

It was also an exceptionally dry month both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and in terms of the number of official rain days.

In addition to that, March 2025 was also a sunnier than average month which means that two out of the first three months of this year have now been sunnier than average with February being our only duller than average month so far.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Very dry down here, the ground is now cracked and broken albeit you don't have to go down very far to find moisture. That could soon change given the forecast and with the trees coming into leaf!

For once it was a cold month in terms of nights - the min is 0.6C below the 91-20 average for my nearest official station, and it was frostier too. The max was well above, mind you, 1.8C higher than the 91-20 average for Faversham.  That belies a higher than normal diurnal range, allied with low dewpoints; some days going from an air frost in the morning to 17C or so in the afternoon.

Here's my weather station summary:

Very similar here and as expected colder at night, although less expected being the warmer max's but likely to be due to the easterly wind being prevalent for much of the month.

The most frosts for March and coldest night since 2018, probably as expected.

Also very dry, the first really dry month for more than a year. Rain rate was an anomaly I need to fix manually...

The main headline here was how dry it was. Just 4.3mm including about 0.5mm in melted frost with some very close by stations missing a heavy shower and only recording 2mm. In complete contrast to the previous months of high pressure which were very cloudy this month they were largely clear and sunny. There were 10 frosts compared to the very wet March last year that had just one and 65mm of rain following an even wetter February of over 100mm of rain. So we are heading towards a very dry Spring in contrast to last year's exceptionally wet one.
