Conclusion
The main weather event in January was Storm Eowyn which brought some very damaging winds but not all that much happened in January apart from that and despite those very high winds from Storm Eowyn, the mean wind speeds throughout the month were actually below the 1991-2020 January average.
In complete contrast to December, January was a colder than average month overall with an above average number of air frosts but unlike in December (which contained an ice day despite being much milder overall), there were no ice days on this occasion.
There was some some decent snowfalls on the nearby hills with a little bit of that getting into those higher and more inland parts of the south of Edinburgh on the odd occasion but for the bulk of Edinburgh, January was another completely snowless month which means that the winter overall, continues to be completely snowless here.
January 2025 was also another drier than average month in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and even more so in terms of the number of official rain days.
Finally, January 2025 was a sunnier than average month and was only our first sunnier than average month since August 2024. It should be borne out though that this doesn't necessarily mean that the year as a whole will be sunnier than average and this was shown up very well last year which ended up being quite a lot duller than average in the end after a sunnier than average January. Nevertheless, this is at least quite a good start on that front.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
