Conclusion
December 2024 gave us our first official ice day for two years but apart from that, it was a very poor winter month and although 1cm of lying snow was officially recorded, this only came about as a result of thick frost which may well have led to an erroneous reading for snow cover and the month was actually completely snowless.
Despite the ice day, December 2024 was quite a lot milder than average overall and was probably our mildest December since 2015 with even a couple of double figures minimums being recorded.
It was also a thoroughly wet month in terms of the actual rainfall amounts but there was a significant dry spell during the Christmas period and the number of official rain days in December 2024 was actually well below average.
December 2024 was yet another significantly duller than average month which produced only just over a half of our 1991-2020 December average sunshine.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
