As we are into a brand new month which is the final month of 2024 and the first month of the meteorological winter, it's time to start a brand new month.

Last month ended up being very dry here, especially in the first part of the month and that resulted in the autumn as a whole being much drier than average in the end.

However, we have already had more rain during this year at Edinburgh Gogarbank than the 1991-2020 annual average and this means that regardless of what happens during this month, this year will go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual amounts.

As the polar vortex gets stronger, it could get wetter as we get further into the winter but although the models are showing a reasonably unsettled outlook just now, there nothing really out of the ordinary showing up for here just now in terms of rainfall.

Regardless of how this month pans out though, this is the very place for posting those all important rainfall totals for this month.

Back to the excruciatingly awful nonsense once more with a ludicrous 62.6mm recorded for the first week - nearly the whole monthly average.

By far the wettest start to winter I have recorded in the past 20 years which is truly breathtaking given that last year finished as the wettest December since 1876 with a beyond ridiculous total of 232.8mm.

Seems odds on that 2023/24 will make the wettest pair of consecutive Decembers given that December 1875 was on the dry side with less rain in total than this month has already produced and December 1877 was only marginally wetter than average.

Looking at the wettest first weeks of December in my records is a sick joke as all of the top four are in this rancid decade

2024 - 62.6mm

2023 - 53.4mm

2020 - 52.6mm

2021-  45.8mm

2005 - 43.0mm

The wettest decade for December was the 1910s which saw an average of 100mm. This decade so far is averaging 146.9mm compared to 57.5mm for the 2010s. The driest December so far was 2021 which finished on 93.6mm. Prior to 2020 only 2008 and 2012 had been that wet since my records began in 2005. An astonishing run of pure and utter filth.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 2.6 mm

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 0.2 mm (as at 10:30 am GMT (10:30 UTC) this morning on Saturday 21 December 2024)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 63.4 mm (84.7% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of rain days during this month: 7 (53.5% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of dry days during this month: 9

This  means that only at least another 11.6 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 63.4 mm (30.3% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of rain days during this winter: 7 (18.9% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of dry days during this winter: 9

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 885.6 mm (112.9% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 138 (100.4% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 143

This means that more official rain days have now been recorded during this year than the 1991-2020 annual average and so regardless of what happens during the rest of this month, this year will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.
