Currently on 28 days here without measurable rainfall.   Now has become the third longest period without measurable rain here in the last 40 years.     Our current record was set during March/April 2002, which was 34 days.    Looking increasingly likely this will be beaten!

Don't know how much rain had fell in Slough but must be too much as few water puddles still hanging around on the road sides despite full sunshine yesterday and strong winds so must be flooded in some areas here.  Back home was bog standard rain and might be only few mm fell.

1mm of rain in the past calendar month...

And lo and behold, this arrived in my inbox. How very unexpected!

Kent - please use less water 

This week the demand for water has been extremely high in Kent and this is putting pressure on supplies.  

We know when it’s hot it can be hard to save water as we all need to stay hydrated, keep our plants healthy and help the kids cool down. If water demand remains high and the hot, dry weather continues this may mean we will struggle to treat and supply your water fast enough to keep up with demand.

Please help us by using as little water as you can throughout the hot weather so we can make sure there’s enough to go around and avoid restrictions later in the summer.

Thankfully small changes really do make a lot of difference…

Local station at Chilgrove in the Downs recorded the last significant rainfall on 8th May 16.6mm. 2.8mm in the three days following, to the 11th; since then 0.6mm 15th May and 0.9mm 11th Jun and Chichester itself got less still on those days.

No rain here since early May either, though the drought was technically broken by about 2 mm last weekend. Looks like the drought will well and truly break here next weekend though.

Looking at United Utilities reservoir levels, they're all below average for the time of year - but not worryingly so at this stage, the two main ones (Dee/Vyrnwy and Thirlmere/Haweswater at 83.0% (90.8% of normal) and 69.2% (94.9% of normal).  Dee/Vyrnwy is actually a little higher than this time last year.

All the models show at least some rain in that Sun-Mon period (some decent amounts) and then showers likely through next week, so I'd expect levels to be up at around the norm by next weekend.

Some people do love to 'crisisify' things, though.

Clearly one of the storms that completely missed here! Likewise as Jiries says, some areas just north of Slough had over 40mm over 2 days. Nada here, zilch.

I know Yateley had some rain on Saturday but it was a brief affair, certainly nothing like what Odiham caught. Very dry and dusty everywhere - the grass looks like how it was around mid July last year.

Last weekends trickle of rain is a distant memory. The Saturday night fever shower was not much more than that. The grass is like early July last summer not the complete scorched landscape yet but heading that way.
Yesterday the BBC forecast for next Monday suggested Monday would be a particularly wet and unsettled day IMBY with outbreaks of rain heavy and thundery. Saturday and Sundays rain in the form of showers looks far less Moominesque but I guess that can change.
That’s gone by the board for the time being though I’ve noticed in the past it can revert nearer the time. We’ll see. The radar shows the change off the SW approaches as it did last weekend though not so lively this time. Has it lost it’s mojo?

The latest water scarcity report from SEPA as issued on 16 June 2023 (as I don't have access to my main PC down here in Hawick, I'm not able to post the usual links for that) shows the same part of NW Scotland which was already at significant water scarcity level is still at that same level this week.

However, the area of moderate water scarcity level has now been extended to cover large part of the south and west Scotland.

All of the rest of Scotland is now at alert level for water scarcity with the exception of the Shetland Islands and even that region is now at early warning status for water scarcity.

We are expected to see a break in this more settled weather over the next few days but this is expected to do very little to alleviate the overall situation which means concerns over what lies ahead  remain very high at the moment.
