I'd not seen it, but knew it was planned - there's a handy website called the Project 2025 Observer which keeps an eye on the various policies in its namesake document, and so far Trump has been going through them one-by-one. Delisting wolves was on there.

The broader picture is that wolves have always been a political hot potato, and for a couple of decades now they've pinged between being protected or not: generally Republicans want to shoot them (or worse - i.e. poisoning with strychnine), the Democrats want to protect them, and as you'd expect views are largely split amongst urban/rural dwellers along similar lines. 

At the wolf centre we were often asked about it, and indeed we had various US officials come and talk about it at our annual seminars. There's an element of "if you have a hunting season it lessens illegal killings" about it all, and indeed when they're fully protected the 3S rule is very much in effect (shoot, shovel, shut up). OTOH you have the opposite in 2013 in Wisconsin, where it was open season for a couple of weeks and they killed around a quarter of their wolves - they were easy targets as they'd largely lost their "there's a human, I'm dead unless I run away" behaviour. (When they're not persecuted, wolves tend to ignore people, or treat them with mild curiosity, as Arctic wolves still do).

I've no doubt that when the Democrats get back in there'll be some more protections reintroduced, and so the cycle continues.
