Yes this may surprise some people but I am expecting a big snow event on the 18th, probably mostly for Scotland and the far N England but details are not figured out yet.

This is one of my favourite scenarios because it always takes people by suprise. Behold the slack low snow situ! Basically take a completely benign synoptic pattern (cold established not necessary!) and bring in a young, active, wavelike low into it. Result: Rain->snow even to lower levels.

Established cold air is not necessary because the cold air is generated in situ by evaporational cooling. As such almost 0 windspeed is essential, you also need rather heavy precipatation and lowish humidity. These conditions are satisfied with a very young secondary low with almost no V bend. This is a low forming in a region of significant baroclinicy (temp gradient) but has not yet developed its own closed circulation.

Now these lows have strong westerly winds on their southern flank, so no chance of snow there, but within a tiny distance (maybe 50 miles) you can go from strong westerlies to almost nothing; and that's where you get the snow. And yes the snow will likely settle even if it takes hours for the rain->snow transition to occur.

We shall be lucky to see some drizzle here in North East Somerset. No lamp post watching here.

Apart from the Scottish Highlands, the three or four days following Wed 22nd look much more promising

Warnings for snow above 300 metres and possible temporary accumulations above 150 metres in Scotland. Nothing much to see I think.

A very light dusting here in Aboyne at 135m, but the hills to the south are white above 250-300m.

Mmm… the ever reliable BBC app has west of Scotland 8- 10 degrees all week. Would need to be a real surprise I think…

The BBC has 9°C with rain here on Wednesday (with the text stating “wet”), the Met Office text says wintry showers.

May as well resurrect this thread!

Arpege suggesting a repeat on Saturday evening:

GEM also on board:

GFS concurs (but turns the ppn to rain quicker)

Met Office and UKV less keen (any lowland snow wet and very transient)

GFS & Gem sticking to their guns (2-3 hours of snow for lowland areas before turning to rain; longer period of snow for the hills)

Arpege rowed back somewhat (brief transient snow before turning to rain)

UKV/UKM still showing snow only to hills in E&W; more extensively in Scotland.

I'm not expecting much/anything (and any snow that does fall/settle here will soon be washed away anyway)

An end to 'winter' that typifies another rubbish one.
