In recent days, it has been slightly wetter than of late here in Edinburgh after a dry January and the north of the UK may well see some further unsettled weather over the coming days, especially in Scotland and more particularly, in the west and NW of Scotland.

Meanwhile, the southern half of the UK continues to be much drier under high pressure. That is a trend which looks set to continue for the foreseeable future and that drier weather might even extend northwards in SE Scotland in particular, as we go further into next week.

Since the vast majority of this forum's members live in the southern half of the UK (that is after all, where the highest population densities are located within the UK), I would probably expect this thread to be fairly quite over the coming days even if there is some further rainfall in Scotland over the coming days.

Nevertheless, I have started this thread just now so that anyone who has anything to report in terms of any rainfall in their area during this month can now do so here.

I did note from your post in the January stats thread that you are in one of the very few locations apart from here in Edinburgh which largely missed out on the wet conditions which large parts of the rest of the UK witnessed during January.

Based on that, I'm sure that you'll no doubt agree with me that the ongoing lack of rainfall just now along with the fact that last year's rainfall deficit never even came close to being completely made up here (even during that last year's relatively wet autumn, our rainfall totals were still never all that far above the long term average), and the fact that there continues to be no signs of any significant rainfall on the horizon according to any of the latest model output (that is even true for everywhere except the far NW of Scotland) raises very serious concerns about possible water shortage issues going into the spring and summer in this part of the world if we don't get a much needed increase in rainfall very soon.

When I have been out and about recently, I have noticed that just about all of the grassy areas are brick hard not due to frost (which is what we would typically expect at this time of the year), but because of the almost constant lack of rainfall which has left everything completely bone dry and rock solid as a result.

That to me, is an indicator that we could really do with getting some much needed rainfall in this very parched part of the world.

I'm  surprised more isn't being made of the lack of rainfall in the South East. We have had zero rainfall for 4 weeks now and just 4mm in the last 35 days. Ground has now dried out and if we don't get a wet Spring there will be water shortages and environmental impacts for sure following last Spring and Summer's severe drought.
