Every chance of the first 11c+ in the CET series. Ive no doubt this Semptember will be another very warm one and most again in the CET comp have too low.

It's one of those transition months, innit?

All things being equal, it should get naturally cooler as the month progresses. Been many a September that has started off like an extension to summer, but ended with low-single figure mins and low-teens maxes.

Whats most remarkable about those stats is the change between the 61-90 and 81-10 averages. 2 decades. 1.6C warming.

Those lower down in the table will need to hope that ECM is on the money with developing high pressure in a relatively cool position for the UK later next week. Cool air with clear skies can really hammer the CET down come mid-September.

Personally, I'm torn between wanting that (due to the mid-table estimate of 14.98) versus another exceptionally warm month to make 2022 stand out even more and keep it well on course to be the warmest year on record.

..... and also for those who like quirky stats

If September 2022 ends up with a positive anomaly (CET Mean, based 1961-90) which it looks very likely to do, it will be the first time in the history of the monthly CET (since 1659) that 16 months in a row have had a positive anomaly

We are currently on 15 (Jun 2021-Aug 2022) and tied with just one other 15 month period (Apr 2006 to Jun 2007)

Seems highly likely now, even with a cool spell mid month.

Annual record target now only +0.44C. With that kind of target we could afford a cooler than average month this autumn and still be on course.

I suppose the biggest threat will be a very cool month- like some of the Octobers in the early 90s, or a wintry December.
