That came about after a total of just 1.4 mm of rain was produced by last night's showers at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with just 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Overall, those above totals for this month about to just 31.7% of the 1991-2020 June average at Edinburgh Gogarbank and only 23.6% of the 1991-2020 June average at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This has been ongoing for quite a long time now, to the point where there has just gone a joke now!!

Summer rain's very hit and miss though. On Friday, we had a really heavy shower that filled containers in our garden with about a centimetre of rain. Look at sepa the next day and it had 0.8mm for the nearest station! Out for a walk the other night in the pentlands, got chased home by an evil looking black cloud that we could see dropping ropes of rain to our west, but passed over us without a drop. Another shower happening right now...

It's nice to know that there's still at least one forum member in the south of Edinburgh after Jerry had moved from there to the Lake District.

As regards to what you have just mentioned though, last night was yet another good example of that because there was a period of rain then which looked to be quite substantial here.

Yet, the end result of that according to SEPA is that just 0.6 mm of rain was recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, along with absolutely nothing at all at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Of course, we don't necessarily have to rely on SEPA for that data because we can also get the rainfall data for those stations from the raw SYNOP data which actually comes in every hour these days (that is the same data which the old and now defunct weathercast site used to use for that purpose) along with 6 hour, 12 hour and 24 hour totals for each day at certain times of the day (these are 00z, 06z, 12z, and 18z).

Despite the fact that the data from SEPA and the raw SYNOP data are from the same station, they are technically not actually the same data because the rain gauge which used for the raw SYNOP data is a different rain gauge from the one which is used for the SEPA data.

Nevertheless, the fact that these two data sets are for the same station in each case means that there shouldn't be much difference between them.

As regards to last night, the raw SYNOP data was in complete agreement with the SEPA data, with 0.6 mm of rain being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with nothing at all at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

In addition to that, I can also report that up to 09:00 UTC on 25 June 2022, Swanston in the south of Edinburgh had only 22.1 mm of rain in total during this month which is even less than that which was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank at that time.

As you say, there might well be a few locations which have had a bit more, but these appear to be very few and far between and never actually coinciding with any of the major stations.

What is really frustrating that there very often seems to be plenty of rain not all that away, but every weather front which comes in from the west keeps in disintegrating before it actually reaches us and so, this rain just isn't getting to those locations in SE Scotland in particular, which needs that rainfall the most.

The vast majority of this area is very dry and parched, and that was shown up very well by yesterday's grass fires which broke out on Calton Hill which resulted in a lot of smoke billowing out right across the city which I was even be able to clearly see from where I live here in NW Edinburgh.

We had 3mm of rain today, which was a bit poor but better than nothing. Takes us up to 35mm for the month so far.

Looking like we may get a bit more overnight on Tuesday but I'm not expecting that much. My garden and allotment really needs a good 10mm+ soaking!

Absolutely stotting down in South Edinburgh at the moment. Some overnight rain too. No doubt Comiston rain gauge will announce 0.8mm later :)

We have just had quite a heavy shower in the north of Edinburgh as well (which is much needed rainfall for the gardens), but I'm sick and tired at looking at the rainfall data for here now because there is never anything meaningful to report from that anymore.

As I write, SEPA is in the process of redesigning its website after the recent cyber attacks, which means that there is a delay in getting their data up to date (that delay is something which they have mentioned somewhere on their website).

As a result, the data for Comiston (which I know, is fairly close to the Braid Hills in the south of Edinburgh) only goes up to 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning as I write.

That is also the case with the data for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and even the data for Edinburgh Gogarbank only goes up to 12 noon BST (11:00 UTC).

That showed a total of 3.8 mm in the 24 hours up to 10am BST (09:00 UTC) at Edinburgh Gogarbank but only 0.6 mm for there since then.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, I got a total of just 0.4 mm since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning according to all of the available data.

For Comiston, the total over that same period was 1.6 mm.

As a result of me not being able to get completely up to date with the data from SEPA, I am once again having to rely on raw SYNOP and BUFR data in order to share this report with everyone.

Comiston isn't a SYNOP site, so I can't get anything from there. I have checked the Met Office WOW site though, and the nearest station to Comiston which I could find there is a station which is named there as DF Edinburgh which is in roughly the same location.

There is a lot of detailed info there and rainfall is listed as part of that, but all of that data over the required time periods is showing up just as 0.0 mm which is clearly incorrect.

According to SEPA, this month's rainfall total at Comiston as at 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning was 25.6 mm which is also the total for this summer as at that same time, whereas the total for this year at same time at Comiston was 288.2 mm.

Swanston weather station is just to the south of Comiston and had a rainfall total for this month of 26.2 mm as at 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning with a further 2.3 mm of rain being recorded since then according to the Met Office WOW site (that increases this month's total for there to 28.5 mm as at 2:15pm BST (14:15 UTC) this afternoon which is also the total for this summer as at that same time).

Meanwhile, the total for this year so far as at that same time at Swanston was 268.1 mm.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, the raw BUFR data at weatherobs.com shows that a total of just 1.6 mm of rain was recorded there since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning as at 2pm BST (13:00 UTC) this afternoon.

This means that the total for there during this month so far and for this summer so far as at that time was only 22.4 mm whilst the total for this year at that same time at that same station was only 216.0 mm.

Finally for Edinburgh Gogarbank, the raw SYNOP data only shows a further 0.2 mm of rain for there as at 2pm BST (13:00 UTC) this afternoon. This raises the total for both this month and this summer there as that same time to 33.6 mm with the total for this year at that same station going up to 264.2 mm as at that same time.

I shall probably leave it to you, to start off next month's thread tomorrow as you are obviously far more likely than me to actually get any rainfall, and I am just tired of reporting the same old results on here for this part of the world  in every single month now.
