12mm from last night's rain brings our January total to 89mm.   Means it is already the 3rd wettest January I've recorded behind 2008 and 2014.

Been a soggy day with 27.6 mm, most of it last night and this evening up to the 12 am station reset. Yet I have managed some decent sunny spells during the day!

Before I present today's data, I must inform everyone that the manner in which I am doing that will now change with immediate effect due the loss of access to all of my previous sources for this data.

This means that I am now having to take this data from the same SYNOP data which I use to report temperatures and sunshine totals on other threads.

Since this SYNOP data comes in 4 times a day in line with when the GFS model runs are produced, this means that I can no longer go by the 09:00 UTC start to each observation day as I would like to, so I have adjusted all of the previous data accordingly.

6z is chosen for this data because that is when the full 24 hour totals come out, although 12 hour totals come out at 6pm every evening with 6 hour totals coming out at noon and at midnight.

As I cannot get this same data for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh (the data from weatheobs.com only goes back a week), I cannot get an accurate picture of the latest totals at that particular station and so, I have decided to leave that one out for now.

This means that t I will now only be reporting this data for Edinburgh Gogarbank until further notice.

Finally, you may notice that there are fewer dry days being reported here than was previously the case but that is because there are a number of days which I would have previously reported as dry days, but where the 24 hour total shows up to be a trace.

This does show that less than 0.2 mm of rain fell on those days but since there was some actual rainfall on those days which might have been enough to wet the ground without being enough for any actual amount to be officially recorded, it is unfair to class those days as being completely dry.

This trace days will therefore neither count towards the actual rainfall totals, or towards the number of dry days. Now,

here is that all important data:-

Yesterday was the wettest day of this month so far and since more rain has now fallen during this month than the 1981-2010 average, this month will now go down as being wetter than average, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

It's certainly been a month of two halves here.

Between 1st-11th January we had just 1.8mm
Total: 82.2mm (wettest January since I started recording in 2017)

We had 20.7mm yesterday and 10.2mm on Wednesday. Exactly half of the month's rain has fallen since Sunday 24th (41.1mm)

It is hard to believe it, but this month had looked as though it might end up being drier than average to begin with and indeed, this month isn't likely to end up being quite as wet as December.

Nevertheless, this has still been another wet month and although the main precipitation bands are being forecast to stay to our south over the coming days, we are still continuing to see plenty of precipitation anyway in the form of further showers which continue to be brought in from off the North Sea on an easterly wind (it's just a pity that these aren't snow showers).

Because of that, there is still a chance that this month's total could end up being over 100 mm for the second month in a row.

How is this January on national figures. I heard December was the wettest since 1929.

155.2mm so far this month and still it comes down (the front hasn't stalled yet, but it's moving very slowly now).

That is, of course, just over 6 inches of rain. Utterly remarkable for here, we get less than that all winter in some years!
