We have now just moved into the first day of the meteorological spring and yet just exactly a year ago at this very time, we were under a deep covering of snow and then on the very first day of the last meteorological spring, an official ice day was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank.
That to date however, is still the last official ice day to be recorded at any of my three local stations as the winter which has just passed failed to deliver a single official ice day at any of my three local station.
Now, it is a completely different story going into this spring because unlike last year, we have already had quite a lot of spring-like weather with some parts of the UK having even already tasted a very early taste of summer.
There is no snow cover around this time and not even any frost. Instead of those things, we have just a bland and boring covering of cloud with the temperatures remaining fairly steady.
Since we are no longer officially in winter, I'm no longer bothered about the temperatures not dropping, but I would still rather see some variety in our weather, rather than the complete borefest which we are experiencing just now.
Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 5.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
