The brief drier spell during yesterday evening didn't last for long as it is now raining quite heavily here in Edinburgh once again.

In the end, a total of 4.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank, along with 3.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with some of that falling as sleet and wet snow for a while during yesterday evening.

Having said that though, the wind appears to have died down as the centre of Storm Deirdre has passed through, although the presence of too much cloud means that the temperatures are still refusing to drop.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 2.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The overnight rain has now finally cleared away and there are some patches of clear sky around. However, there is still a lot of cloud around and the presence of an anvil top to my east which is clearly the top of a cumulonimbus cloud tells me that there are still a few showers around.

The wind has picked up again during the early hours of this morning but because the very centre of Storm Deirdre had already moved through during last night, the wind is now coming from the exact opposite direction from where it was coming from then so that the wind at 8am this morning was now gusting up to 33.6mph from the west at Edinburgh Gogarbank with maximum gusts during this morning of up to 34.2mph from the SW as at 8am this morning.

The overnight rain has resulted in a total of 4.6 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as yet another official rain day at both of those stations as a result.

With the change of wind direction to more of an Atlantic air mass, this morning is slightly milder than of late, so the temperature at 8am this morning was 3.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A walk up Blackford Hill this morning revealed small patches of snow and ice in shady spots. All distant hills are white above 400m, both towards the Borders in the south and north to the Ochils and Trossachs. Clear skies and 6 C but high cloud now moving in

After what has been a delightfully sunny morning, it's now gone all gloomy and overcast with a passing light shower. However, we've lost the cold with 9.4 c & 90% h under lighter winds so the central heating is not having to work that hard to keep the house warm today.

Max was 9.8 c at 1 pm from a min of 2.5 c at 6.30 am.

After a very sunny start to this afternoon, it has become a bit cloudier, but this wasn't enough to prevent a total of 3.8 hours of sunshine from being recorded for today in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

This means that a total of just 9.4 hours of sunshine or more, is now needed for the period between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall, and that is with there still being another 15 days to go until the end of this month, so we now only need to see an average of 37.2 minutes of sunshine per day or more over that period in order for that to happen.

Today's maximum temperature was 7.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 4.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 4.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

As the evening has gone on, the weather has gone more and more downhill to the extent that it has now started raining here in Edinburgh once again. That hasn't yet added anything more to today's rainfall total so far in this neck of the woods, but the temperatures are already refusing to drop as a result of there being too much cloud around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 6.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
