Rather frustratingly, the temperatures here are refusing to drop yet again despite the fact that the sky appears to be fairly clear. In fact, we were very close at 8pm yesterday evening (which was about 4 hours ago) to getting an official air frost at Edinburgh Airport before the temperature at that station, then jumped back up, but I can only assume that this is probably due to there being a bit too much of a breeze.

What has happened though, is that I can now confirm that yesterday was the first completely dry day at both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh since 17 November, thus ending a run of 21 consecutive days without a single completely dry day at both of those stations. Having said that though, there hasn't really been any massive rainfall amounts on any of those days and because of that, our rainfall totals for this month so far are only around average for this stage of December according to the 1981-2010 averages.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 3.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A cold and frosty start to this morning with an official air frost being recorded at Edinburgh Airport and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, but only a ground frost at Edinburgh Gogarbank where the temperature has remained just above freezing. However, there is a veil of high cloud covering all but the far eastern part of the sky so that although we should see some sunshine to begin with, I'm not expecting any decent sunshine totals today.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 0.1° at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -2°C at Edinburgh Airport and -1.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 1.0° at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -2°C at Edinburgh Airport and -0.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Yet another garbage frost free night here due to the toxic wind which never relents. Min of 1.2C and not even the sunshine that was forecast just lots of cloud. Awful start to winter.

There is still some thin high cloud around, but the Sun has broken through that quite nicely so that a total of 1.5 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

However, there is still some frost around although the temperatures have jumped up by quite a lot over the last hour or so, so that the temperature at 12 noon was 4.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There has been some further high cloud around during this afternoon but in the end, a total of 3.3 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank which as things stand, keeps this month on course for being sunnier than average overall. Having said that though, it shouldn't take much at this time of year to get a sunnier than average month, given the lack of available daylight and we learned quite an important lesson from last month on how any potential for this month to be sunnier than average could easily be ruined by any easterly which comes in later on down the line.

Today has been a cold day though with the frost never completely clearing away from north-facing shaded areas all day. On that note, today's maximum temperature was 5.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. We haven't yet had any really cold days during this winter (which in my book is day which either goes down as an official ice day or one where the temperature barely rises above freezing all day), so today was the coldest day of the winter so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 3.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That drop in the temperature which I reported on my last post here didn't last for long because there is now more in the way of cloud and because of that, the temperatures are now refusing to drop.

This now means that the temperature at 8pm this evening was 2.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 2.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
