This is the first CC thread of the meteorological winter, but there is nothing very wintry about the weather at the moment as there is a varying amount of cloud with the temperature refusing to drop as usual, due to there being too much cloud and too much wind.

There has been some showers over the last few hours and in the end, a total of 5.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 5.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was around 4°C.

Dull, wet and windy. 10.4 c & 92% h under a strong southerly wind (again). 3.0 mm so far today.

A bit of a comedown on yesterday. Oh well, at least we're now a month closer to meteorological spring, yes the weather doesn't always follow suit but we would properly get to notice the lengthening daylight.

There was a bit of clear sky to my east a short while ago, but that has gone now and this winter has started off on a rather boring, overcast and uninspiring note with more in the way of constant grey skies, and with nothing which is even remotely interesting actually happening. If the rest of today is like that, this will therefore be one of the most boring starts to any winter which I can remember and given that I live in one of the most boring parts of the UK on average when it comes to our weather, that wouldn't surprise me one single bit.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 3.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 3°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so last night was slightly colder than the previous night but not cold enough to prevent the frost-free hell from last month continuing into this winter as a result of there being too much cloud around yet again. This spell of weather isn't turning to be as mild here as it was originally going to be according to the official forecasts but given the latest model output, we might still have a fairly long wait for our first official air frost of this winter which would be rather disappointing when you consider that the same month last year had even contained an official ice day.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am this morning was 4.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The borefest goes on here with yet more constant grey skies which has resulted in nothing in the way of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

The rain radar maps show that there is some light rain around, but I have yet to see any evidence of that on the ground which is still bone dry at the moment.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was around 6°C. That is not exactly all that exciting, and is certainly not all that cold for this time of year.

When I ventured out just after lunchtime, I noticed that there was still a lot of blue sky in the northern half of the skyline. However, all of that was in the wrong place for us to be able to see anything of the Sun which means that in the end, nothing in the way of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

This means that although this is only the very first day of the winter, we have already just had the first completely sunless day of both this month and this winter which is already in complete to last month when we had to wait until well into the second half of the month for the first sunless day of that month.

If there is any consolation though, I can report that for both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, 2018 as a whole will go down as a sunnier than average year overall regardless of what happens during this month since there has already been more sunshine during this year so far at both of those stations than the 1981-2010 annual average.

That is largely due to what happened during the summer which shows that in the context of the entire year, it is always far more important to get a sunnier than average summer than what it is to get a sunnier than average winter due to the greater availability of daylight at that time of year.

Nevertheless, this is still not the start to the winter in terms of sunshine amounts which I would have been looking for as this run of poor sunshine totals which stretches back to the middle of last month goes on and is quite frankly, starting to get a bit beyond a joke now.

There was also a bit of rain when I was out and about earlier, but we only really got the tail end of that as it started to clear away and so, it wasn't around for long.

Nevertheless, this has resulted in a total of 0.4 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and whilst that isn't much, this now makes today the 14th day in a row which has failed to stay completely dry here.

Today's maximum temperature was 6.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 5.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Was okay in the morning but still managed on just over an hour sunshine and the gloom returned during the afternoon

Temperatures continue to be beyond boring with a min of 2.6C and max of 5.4C. Same pitiful diurnal ranges no matter what these days

The skies are overcast just now and not for the first time recently, this already means that the temperatures are refusing to drop due to there being too much cloud around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 6.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
