It comes to something when the Chilterns gets 5cm plus from a Norrh Westerly. Here in Stoke we have just thick ice aroind and dodged all the overnight showers.

 

Watching the trajectory of the showers last night on the radar, I'd have been sure your region would have seen snow.

I could see some very bright echoes to the west of you in east Wales/west Cheshire, so perhaps they 'stole' your snow.

General question: Do we have any posters in the Whitchurch/Nantwich area?

We got a dusting over all surfaces, which fell after I was tucked up in the land of nod. Must have followed a break in the cloud cover and a big drop in temps as the small flakes froze in situ.

Saw some pics this morning from north of where I live, albeit at a higher area of St Helens, with a covering of what looked to be around 1-2cm.

Luck of the draw. I've 'won' a few times since the turn of the century, lost a few times. I'm more ambivalent about missing out of snowfall these days. Unless it's pre-Xmas snow, which makes me madder than Mad McMad the maddest mad person in Madland.

Had an icy sleety shower around 4am here in Exeter - I could hear it - I think there were flakes mixed in looking at lampost - was enough to wake me up! But temp rose to +2c in shower during early hours. DARTMOOR saw a dusting of snow too but melted by 7am.

This winter is terrible and yet again temperatures are not yet falling below much either and now we have milder weather heading our way so more cloudiness and dampness.

Who is getting fed up or model watching with so much hope given we are at Solar Minimum and the fact we have had a SSW. There was so much promise but little delivery or anything that is notably cold and wintry - what's absent is the inability to get HLB and the way the models are behaving it looks like we are in a repeat of January 2015 or Jan 2018 with lot's of cold zonality but no real HLB. - I.E Lot;s of transient northerlies and which become north westerlies, then weak ridges with a wrath of milder air (pizza) heading our way and LP systems developing off the eastern seaboard racing across the Atlantic - which help from Azores HP, thus giving little time for pressure to build over northern Latitudes like Iceland or Greenland. - So thanks to that mid Atlantic ridge the LP systems will topple over the high and then dive southwards and give the Alps and most of central Europe snow (just where they don't need more) yet give us little if anything!

It certainly seems as though some higher power has put a Satanic curse on the weather in this part of the world, in order to make it rather more boring and uninteresting than what it used to be even just as recently as last winter.

I didn’t get snow for my birthday yesterday, but I rarely do!  Seriously, you’d think being born in January, I’d stand a good chance but more often than not it rains!

I read that it’s your birthday next week.  How many snowy birthdays have you had?

My Mum's birthday was on the 15th of January and tradionally, that has tended to be quite a good time for snow in this part of the world in the past. Sadly though, there was never any chance of that happening this time and it really sucks that we still can't snow here even now, at the very time when the vast majority of people on this forum have been getting that in their own area, even down in the south of England.

I live right close to the east coast and although this isn't perhaps an area which is as coastal as the likes of Aberdeen in terms of our exposure to any winds from off the North Sea, this area is coastal enough for that to have such a big impact on what snow we get to the extent that in previous winters, I would frequently see a lot of cars coming into the city which have been topped by deep snow, whilst we have had nothing at all here (that is something which I haven't seen happen here during the last couple or so winters though).

Nevertheless, this is Scotland that I live in. I live a lot further north than those people in the south who have been getting it recently and so, I have a right to expect to be getting it here as well (for the same reason that I would expect the south of England to get above 30°C during the summer, but not expect that here), despite our coastal and low lying location. That is what is making the fact that we are still completely snowless here during this winter feel even worse.

Furthermore, Richard from Aberdeen still complains about not getting enough snow in his area, but he at least got a bit of snow during that fairly recently northerly shot which is still better than nothing and therefore, more that what we have had here which has amounted to absolute zulch!!

I don't expect Edinburgh to get more snow than Aberdeen since Aberdeen is after all, much further north than Edinburgh anyway and would therefore, be expected to get more snow than here. What really gets my gripe though is that people in the south of England often complain about not getting enough snow (I haven't forgotten for example that last year's winter moaning thread was started by Solar Cycle with the sub-title of "it's a southern thing" which shows that up really well) even when we aren't getting much snow here in this part of Scotland where I live.

The manner in which Solar Cycle started off last winter's moaning thread was just the exact opposite of me starting of a summer moaning thread by subtitling that as being a "Northern (or Scottish) Thing". Yet, you will never see me complaining about the south of England getting over 30°C during the summer when we aren't getting that here because I know that since live that much further north, I have no right to expect that here.

It's just a shame a that the southerners can't equally follow that same lead during the winter, and that it p@&ses me off so much that part of the south of England HAVE been getting some snow recently at a time where our completely snowless hell goes on here in Edinburgh.

Actually Exeter hasn't seen any snow so far as you may know but Dartmoor has had a light covering!

Edinburgh has not had a single bit of lying snow all winter, as I have explained in my threads recently on this forum. However, I don't see why there has to be such a fascination with what happened during last year which after all, is history as far as I'm concerned. To me, it is what is happening right now which is more as far as I'm concerned and the fact of the matter is that although you might not be getting any snow where you are in the SW of England, there are plenty of members of this forum who live in the south of England, who ARE getting snow just now and that is why the fact that we have nothing at all during this winter so far in terms of actual lying snow, p@*ses me off so much just now.

There are also plenty who are just getting rain, even if 20 miles away there's been some wet snow. It doesn't pee me off, though, it just makes me resigned to watching another cruddy winter pass by.

The last snowy birthday I had was 2010.  Before that I had a couple in the early 60’s and that’s about it!  My mum’s birthday was the day before mine and she too, usually got rain!  I thought this year there might be a chance but as yet we’ve had no snow. Like you though, I’ve seen cars covered in snow so it hasn’t been far away!  We’re just East of the Pennines, which shelter us!  

Of course it will all come mid February when I’m going on holiday and will make driving to the airport difficult and will probably delay the flight!  That usually happens!

Happy birthday for next Tuesday Richard!  It’s my son’s girlfriend’s birthday on Wednesday and the current output suggests she might get snow. Having said that, this time last week I thought I stood a good chance but we remain snowless!
