I have now had to restart this thread since I am now on the new server, and the other thread which I started at just after midnight has been left behind on the old server.

The sky is currently clear here in Edinburgh and for a while, this led to a drop in the temperatures although the temperatures are now refusing to drop any further.

Yesterday was yet another bone dry day here despite the presence of some nearby showers during yesterday evening and last night so if today also ends up staying dry, we will be going into an official absolute drought at Edinburgh Gogarbank where there has been no more than 0.2 mm of rain on any day (and that was just the one day) since 13 October 2018.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4am this morning was 1.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

EDIT:

I will give some other info here from yesterday since although I did post that in yesterday's CC thread, that info has since been lost on the old server and I often like to refer back to that when I am compiling my other posts for other threads such as the monthly statistics threads.

First of all, I can report that a total of 6.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for yesterday in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Furthermore, yesterday's maximum temperature was 7.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes yesterday, the coldest day of the autumn so far.

The lamentable excuse for a cold spell continues. Just vile and unpleasant with more wet, windy weather and joke temperatures.

Hasn't fallen below 3C overnight, despite only reaching 6.0C yesterday, and has in fact been stuck between 3 and 4C for almost 10 hours. It's just excruciating tedium here no matter what these days.

Minimum temperatures from this rotten spell are just the same as what we had on the warmest day of the month. Once again I draw the short straw by missing out on last Saturday's weather but having to endure this weekend's utter garbage

There has been a late dip in the temperatures which are still dropping as I write, although that has now taken us into a bright and mostly sunny start to today with only small amounts of cloud.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was -0.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where the first official air frost of the season has now been recorded as a result), 3°C at Edinburgh Airport (after a minimum of 1°C) and 0.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

10.1 c and bright with some sunny breaks after what has been a wet night with 15 mm here at Folkestone, even spotted some lightning in the small hours. Now the sun & strong nor'easter wind are drying everything up quickly but looks like the lawn had a good soaking.

A small hail (and rain) shower going on at the moment here - with gusty winds too.

The temperature's fallen to 7.8C, which is quite cold for the time of day!

EDIT: Down to 6.2C now. There's quite a swirl visible on the radar over north Kent.

A fairly bright and mostly sunny morning means that a total of 2.5 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as 12 noon.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature eventually bottomed out to -0.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That gave us our first official air frost of the season at Edinburgh Gogarbank, although the wait for the first official air frost of the season at Edinburgh Airport and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh goes on.

Nevertheless, this was enough to make last night the coldest night of the autumn so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, as well as the joint second coldest night of this autumn so far at Edinburgh Airport.

However, the temperatures have jumped up by quite a lot during the course of this morning, so the temperature at 12 noon was 7.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that today is already slightly milder than yesterday at all three of my local stations.

Its been dry and sunny since dawn here in SE Kent.

Ample sunshine, 11.3c and an RH of 62% has resulted in a very unexpected drying day for the washing !

Most of this afternoon has been sunny and as a result of that, a total of 5.1 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

The change of the clocks to GMT means that the official time of sunset here in Edinburgh for today is at 4:41pm this afternoon and this means that we are now into the time of year where it has become rather difficult to get any recorded sunshine after 4pm on any given day. Indeed, it won't be long now before this is no longer even possible and because of that, I have decided that from now on, I will only give a further update on a day's sunshine total in my last update just after 8pm if there is any recorded sunshine between 4pm and 5pm on that day. If I don't give such an update just after 8pm, it will be safe to assume that the total so far at 4pm was the final total for the day.

Anyway, we have finally just had a shower of rain a short while ago although as has become the norm now, this was barely enough to wet the ground which means that our rainfall totals for today remain resolutely stick on that same old usual figure of 0.0 mm for both Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, the wind is becoming more easterly now which has started to bring those showers more in this direction from in off the North Sea, and there is a line of showers just off the east coast which could yet still head in this direction and stop any official absolute drought at Edinburgh Gogarbank from happening as from 1am tomorrow morning.

According to the original forecast as well, that wasn't supposed to happen since we were meant to be seeing high pressure building back in for a time which cause any showers to die out during today, and increase the chances of a frost for tonight. Now, the sudden offset of this easterly will probably no doubt, result in the temperature refusing to drop during tonight as a result of there being too much cloud and possibly, too much wind.

Anyway, today's maximum temperature was 8.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 5.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 6°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

After another showery day skies have cleared and it's already down to +1.2C

johncs2016
28 October 2018 20:32:52

Tonight is turning into one of those nights where it's a shame that we're only at the end of October and not in December/January because when the skies are relatively clear, it is already turning out to be really cold before the next shower of rain (which would be more likely to be delivering a dusting of snow if this was December/January as a result of it being so cold) then comes in off the North Sea and causes the temperature to then go up slightly.

So far, an earlier shower of rain has resulted in a total of just 0.2 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm this evening, but with nothing at all at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, we have just had a further shower of rain and it is yet to seen what comes from that in terms of any recorded rainfall.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was already down to just 0.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1°C at Edinburgh Airport, but had gone back up to 4.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh thanks to that latest shower of rain.

Here near Wooler we had a high of 6.9 that occurred during the rain last night, yesterday a high of 6.6, both record lows for last 5 year in Oct. Tonight down to -0.6 already, record is -0.8, though we have now had 2 frosts compared to the Oct norm of 1.

I don't normally post again on these threads until I begin the next day's thread at midnight. However, the temperature has been really taking a real tumble tonight to the extent that this would be fairly impressive, even in the middle of winter. This makes it hard to believe that it's still only the end of October and just after the middle of autumn as we seem to have somehow, gone almost straight from summer into winter and missed out autumn altogether.

As at 10pm tonight, a total of just 0.2 mm of rain had fallen from this evening's showers at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, the temperature at 10pm tonight has already dropped to -0.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -1°C at Edinburgh Airport and -0.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that for the first time this season, an official air frost has now been recorded at all three of my local stations with tonight already being the coldest night of this autumn so far as a result at all three of my local stations.
