It's a special day for me as we have just entered the day of my birthday (I won't give my age away, except to say that I can always refer to myself as being 21 again).

On a more serious note though, there's nothing particularly special about the weather just now.

The much talked about cold front brought a little bit of rain but as usual, this was barely enough to wet the ground. This did result in 0.2 mm of rain being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank which is the first recorded rainfall there since 13th October 2018. However, I'm pretty sure that it takes more than that on any given day to end an absolute drought so if that is the case, then this is not enough to avert the possible onset of an official absolute drought at that station on Sunday. Furthermore, there was no measurable rainfall from that which was recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Now that this cold front has moved through though, the temperatures have dropped a bit, so the temperature at midnight was 8.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which for all three of my local stations, already makes tonight our coolest night for quite a while.

It's still rather cloudy here for what is supposed to be a much "clearer" air mass and so, the borefest goes on with yet more constant grey skies and yet another boring grey and mostly overcast nothingness which serves no purpose whatsoever (even if we had some rain here, that would at least be serving some sort of purpose).

Having said that though, it is a lot colder than of late this morning so the temperature at 8am this morning was 5.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A sleet shower has just blown through - judging by the sky to the north it will not be the last one.

The Sun has broken through a lot more during the course of this morning and although there's a bit more in the way of cloud around just now, a total of 2.2 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

It took a bit longer than normal for the overnight minimum temperature from last night to be reached, but that has eventually ended up as 5.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was a rather chilly 7.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Brightened right up with sunshine, quite uplifting after that dull and damp morning (0.2 mm of drizzle).

Temperatures crept down to 9.6 c by mid-day but has picked up slightly to 12.4 c currently but the 66% h & brisk NW wind are taking the edge off it anyway.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 8.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Revolting day. Nasty cold wind, frequent showers and very little sun in between. Max 6.7C but the min of 3.4C was exactly the same as on the warmest day of the month last Saturday

5.6mm of rain. What you used to get from a northerly really but as soon as it gets cold enough for snow you can bet the northerlies will go back to being the dross of recent winters i.e. sun nearly all day with only a few passing showers

The rest of today has brought more in the way of clear skies and in the end, a total of 5.8 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Today's maximum temperature was 8.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes today, the coldest day of the autumn so far at all three of my local stations and if my memory serves me right, I think that this is also the first time since away back in April, that the temperature at any of my three local stations has failed to reach double figures.

The temperatures are also dropping away nicely under clear skies and what is even more interesting, is the dew points have also dropped to below freezing for the first time during this current autumn/winter season. In this instance, that just shows how dry the air is just now, but this is also one of the things which can determine whether it is cold enough to snow or not once we get to the actual winter, so I'm hoping that we will be able to see plenty more of that then.

With that in mind, the temperature at 8pm this evening was already down to 5.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
