Dry and clear with starry skies (it's just a pity that we can't get those same clear skies during the day just now, and get a decent sunshine total as a result).

In the end, a total of 3.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 13.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

At the moment, there are no signs yet of the really windy weather which has been forecast to hit this area during today.

However, it is dull and overcast as usual, and it has also started raining here in the last wee while.

Last night's minimum temperature was 12.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11°C at Edinburgh Airport and 11.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so it was cooler than the previous night though not quite as cool as it was forecast to be.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 13.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Cloudy, breezy and mild, with the occasional very light shower.

From the rainfall radar it looks as though Scotland is getting (or about to get) a thorough soaking.  It's odd that the south-east boundary of the rain follows almost exactly the Scottish/English border.

Believe it or not, the Sun is actually shining here in Edinburgh just now although how on Earth it is still managing to do so with everything else which is happening is completely beyond my comprehension. Nevertheless, a total of 24 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

Apart from that, we have had some very heavy and at times, torrential rain during the last few hours and despite the fact that it had been completely dry at 8am this morning, a total of 9.6 mm of rain has now been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon along with 7.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will go down as yet another official rain day at both of those stations and in addition to that, this also makes today the wettest day of both this month and this autumn so far at both of those stations.

However, it is the wind which has been the main story of today as expected. The day started off calm enough but at 12 noon, the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank was already gusting up to 48.5 mph from the SSW with even the mean wind speeds there getting up to 26.1mph. The letter box on my west facing front door is already rattling quite a lot with that, which is making it very noisy indeed, and the forecast is for this afternoon to be even worse.

Apart from that though, it is actually yet another fairly warm day although it doesn't feel all that warm in that wind. The temperature did briefly drop to 10.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank at 9am which took it to below the overnight minimum for that station which I had already reported. However, the temperature at 12 noon has now gone up to 16.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17°C at Edinburgh Airport and 15.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Mercifully, not that much in the way of drama at this end, dry some bright spells and a fair bit of cloud. The 20.2 C & 82% H would feel pleasantly warm if it wasn't for that brisk south west wind.

Just a shame that going by the medium range outputs, my luck won't hold out for very long. Oh well, s**t happens when it comes to our climate.

14.7C here, highest gust so far has only been 48mph.

A very heavy but brief shower about 2pm

It still looks fairly bright here at times and a total of 1.3 hours of sunshine has now been reported for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

However, it is still very windy here and the highest gusts so far as at 4pm this afternoon have been 58.4mph at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 66.0mph at Edinburgh Airport, both from the SW.

These winds are continuing to feed in some frequent heavy blustery showers as well, which has now increased today's already quite high rainfall total to 12.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 9.2 mm at the botanic gardens as at 4pm this afternoon.

With the cold front having already moved through, the temperatures have been dropping over the last few hours, so I can safely report that today's maximum temperature was 16.3°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17°C at Edinburgh Airport and 16.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

By 4pm this afternoon though, the temperature had dropped to 11.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12°C at Edinburgh Airport and 12.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This evening is at least going out on a much clearer note and in the end, a total of 2.4 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

It's still very windy here, but the wind is gradually dying down now (although it was still gusting up to 33.6mph from the SW at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm this evening) which should at least, prevent it from being noisy in these flats when it comes to bed-time. That in turn means that there shouldn't be any problems with sleeping as a result.

Since my last report, there has still been the odd shower, but these are now dying away and becoming much less frequent. Nevertheless, today's rainfall total as at 8pm this evening has crept up to 13.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 9.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 10.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

11C and still quite windy - feels chilly

Our highest gust was 51mph but I see Loftus had 71mph and Lion Inn on Blakey recorded 69mph.

Loftus is a very exposed cliff top (official) site between Redcar and Whitby.
