Welcome to St. Swithin's Day.

For those who believe in the Swithin's Day legend, those farmers and growers who are desperate for rain might want it to rain today and then, carry on raining for the next 40 days afterwards.

Others who believe in the St. Swithin's Day legend though who are happy to just see some decent weather might want it to stay dry today, and then for the next 40 days after that.

Luckily though (or unluckily depending on how you view that), I don't think that we've ever come close to see the St. Swithin's Day legend ever hold true either way (although this lend one or two ideas for Kevin Brads as regards to one of famous statistics threads on this forum).

Anyway and back on topic, we actually have a clear night for once, but quite a warm night although the temperature has dropped to 16.6ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 17.9ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at midnight.

The Sun made a brief appearance here at around sunrise but now, there is a lot of cloud around as ex-Hurricane Chris starts to make his presence felt in this part of the world. At the moment, there is still a bit of blue sky around to my south and west but as none of this has been in the right place to allow us to see any sunshine, nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 13.1ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 13.9ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so it was milder than the previous night.

This morning is also a bit warm and sticky for my liking and at 8am this morning, the temperature is already at 18.3ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 18ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 18.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

It just seems as though we just can't seem to get any sort of respite from this relentless, really warm, dry and sunny weather just now in this part of the world as the Sun has broken through here yet again despite the forecasts telling us that any brightness would be limited today, although just 48 minutes of sunshine have been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh as at 10am this morning.

Once again though, it is really warm here for so early in the day and even as early as 10am this morning, the temperature was already at 21.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 21.3ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which is unbelievably warm for so early in the day here in Scotland, even at this time of year.

There is a lot more cloud around now but for most of this morning up to just a short while ago, the Sun has been shining defiantly anyway, giving the impression that it was more or less, sticking its two fingers up at the latest forecasts and telling them to f*#k off. The end result of this is that 1.6 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

As the cloud cover has increased though, the Sun has found it increasingly difficult to be seen through it and because of that, the temperature isn't rising by as much now. Therefore, the temperature at 12 noon was 20.7ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21ºC and 22.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Hot (29C), completely clear, deep Provençal sky. Small breeze to keep things fresh.

Already swept the front and back gardens, power washed the patio, loaded up the green waste bin and put a lamb shoulder on the barbie for this evening.

No more jobs to do. Heading into the paddling pool shortly. Just about a perfect summer day.

Ex-Hurricane Chris appears to be very slowly and gradually winning through against the Sun and the really dry and warm conditions from earlier on today which have dominated for most of this summer so far.

This means that it was always inevitable that the July permacast would eventually get back underway and that is what has happened during the last couple of hours with nothing in the way of sunshine being recorded during that time.

However, that still doesn't mean that the dry conditions has lost that battle just yet because over the last wee while, the rain radar maps have been showing it to be raining here, but without any of that actually being visible here at ground level.

That is important because there is one weather station in Edinburgh (namely the botanic gardens in Edinburgh) which is still technically, in an official absolute drought, and which is now into day 25 of that drought as a result of yesterday being dry. This means that unless we start to see some rainfall actually reaching the ground, Edinburgh is never going to be completely drought-free.

One thing which is happening though, is that the temperatures are now refusing to rise any further and have actually dropped a bit during the last hour or so. For now, the maximum temperatures reached 21.3ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 22.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 2pm this afternoon was 20.4ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 21ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 21.6ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Temps hovered around a sensible 23 C along with humidity being in the mid 60% with a touch of breeze under near unbroken sunshine here at this coastal edge of Kent. Nice enough to sit outside without the threat of spontaneous combustion - although there was the invasion of the flying ants for a short time.

Here in Edinburgh, the July permacast goes on and so, a total of 1.6 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon with nothing at all in that department since 12 noon.

Some light rain has also finally resulted in 0.4 mm of rain being recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon. Once again though, the rain is refusing to fall in the very part of Edinburgh where I live, where it is most badly needed in order to help out those extremely parched grasslands since this is the same area which virtually missed out on Friday's showers.

Some very light rain has been falling at times, but this hasn't been enough to even wet the ground properly. The result of this is that there is still nothing in the way of rainfall being recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where the absolute drought which is now into its 25th day, therefore gone as a result and until that situation changes, Edinburgh can never be a completely drought-free zone.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 18.6ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 19ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 19.4ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so it has turned a bit cooler over the last few hours.

This evening has brought about a continuation of our permacast hell from earlier on with yet more constant grey skies which means that in the end, the rather dismal total of just 1.6 hours of sunshine was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank which is rather disappointing considering that it had looked for a while this morning as though the Sun had broken through against all of the odds.

There has been a bit of light rain at times, but nowhere near enough to replenish the parched grasslands and gardens as a total of just 0.6 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 10pm, but with still nothing at all at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where it seems as though the absolute drought just will not end.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 10pm tonight was 17.4ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 18ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 18.2ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh so this is turning into another very and sticky night and I am sweating quite a lot as a result of that yet again.
