Just wondering what you're indoor temperatures are? Certainly this heatwave - esp for Devon has been the longest and hottest since 2006, but even then we had cooler days but what's worse of all are not only the high nighttime minimums but the indoor temps - highest ever recorded 39c in my office 9am this morning and 32c in my bedroom (sunset) west facing 9pm? Just so incredibly warm!! I have never recorded an indoor temp higher than 27 or 28c ever let alone above 30c. Any suggestions of keeping cool? Opening the window will let more hot hair in and at nights even a bedroom lamp with a window open will attract all the moths and midges flies etc.

Also by Exeter Quay there seems to be no breeze, it seems so, so still. - Plus my house is semi detached too! - So breeze due to wind direction never get's felt even if window is open.

This heat is too much! It's making me sick now! The fact this indoor heat built up during the day isn't being discharged by night makes it all that more uncomfortable indeed.

Been going on for over a month now but I've kept silent.

How are you coping with high indoor temps and what are the maxes you're recording?

My Dad has been up to Nottingham & Peterborough on business - it is a pleasant 23c - 24c there apparently and comfortable 12 or 13c by night!

These are awful temps and ones that a car or a shed should be getting and not a house!

I can only sympathise and it sounds like the insulation is very poor. If the usual advice doesn't help (good cross-ventilation early in the morning and late in the night and then everything shut including the curtains), then you need A/C.

Don't get a portable unit though, they are noisier and less efficient. Get proper split A/C and look for a very high energy efficiency rating and a low sound number (<20 dB).

The initial cost will be higher, but you'll save money long term and it will obviously increase your quality of life in the summer.

If you can't afford this, then even a fan should help.

I am getting 26-27C here during the day and 22-23C during the night, so still pretty comfortable.

It's been over 25C of an evening indoors for weeks now. Friday night saw the warmest temperatures so far this summer, 33C in my bedroom (which fell to 25C by midnight as the aircon was really struggling). It peaked at 32C yesterday afternoon before I put the AC on, although on both Friday and Saturday nights it remained above 28C in the back bedroom until gone midnight, even with the window open.

Talking of which, the back bedroom currently shows this:

...and that's with the window open all morning. It's around 22C outside at the moment but there's very little wind yet again.

It's 28C in my bedroom (on the front, west-facing side of the house).

Downstairs with the windows open it's presently 26C.

Pretty rubbishy, TBH, but at least I have the portable AC to help with sleeping.

(Incidentally with split AC the noise indoors isn't the problem, it's the outside unit which will pee off your neighbours as they tend to peak around 59db.)

A portable aircon will be a tenth of the price, albeit it won't be as good.

EDIT: And if it's a portable air-con you end up going for, work out the room size and how many BTUs worth of cooling you need before buying. The cheapest ACs tend to be 8000 or 9000 BTUs and although that's enough for a 9x9 room like my bedroom, it wouldn't do much for a bigger room. Also bear in mind they come with whacking great hoses and although you can get extensions from Amazon they reduce the efficiency of the AC somewhat. You'll also need something to plug the gap around the hose when it goes out the window!

After hovering around 24-25C indoors since mid June, this last couple of days we’ve moved up a notch to 25-26C. The house is thick walled, a little damp and has no cavity wall (and no south facing windows) so tends to be relatively cool in summer, but even here it’s started to get a little warm.

36c the max so far in the conservatory, which is NE facing. Wonderful for drying clothes, and still the RH is 40% in there.

31C in my study with the window open (and it's east facing). It's a new build house and is very good at retaining heat! Excellent in winter but flippin' sweltering this weekend!

I remember during one heatwave, the advice was to open your loft door to allow heat to escape.  I never tried it so I don’t know if it works.

I have all my bedroom curtains closed during the day to stop the sun shining in and leave my bedroom windows and upstairs doors open in case we get a breeze.  At night I open the curtains but keep all the windows open and put the fan on directed at the bed.  That works for me!

I have one of those cooler units that you put water in but you’re supposed to keep windows closed so it just makes the air damp and horrible.  I’ve found keeping all windows open and having a fan on draws cooler, fresher air in at night and makes it much more comfortable.  I bought a pedestal fan from Tesco last week for £20 and it’s quiet enough even on the high setting.

Currently 31.5 C in my famed west-facing hobby room at 9.15 pm. I don't think it's ever fallen below 28 C in the past week. I have a fan whirring away but can't have windows wide open on account of my timid indoors only puss, but it' only serve to let in hot air from the outside brickwork heated up by the sun anyway.

We got double glazing put in a few years back, as well as outside wall and attic padding. Worst and most costly mistake ever. Keeps all the heat out in winter, and trapped in in summer. Worst of both worlds.

We’re up to 27C, but there’s a decent breeze this evening so now it’s fallen below 25 it’s time to get some air through: all windows and doors open where possible.

Now that's putting it mildy! - No pun intended but gosh what an uncomfortable room to sleep in - I remember when I lived in Canada - many house had air con So it was always a pleasant 18-20c in my bedroom.

Maybe we are not use to the severity and persistence of the heat!?

Never knew this would last weeks or over a month?

What's interesting is that it's actually cooler further south and south east - the hottest weather is actually WEST and SW England!! - Hot spots = Exeter, Bristol, Taunton, Bath etc.

Maxed out at 32c today - even in the shade. But higher in sun.

Interesting that Jiries reported ceiling fans in Kent. None of my friends' houses have them, nor did my grandparents, nor (for that matter) do my neighbours here. All of those live in old houses though, the newest would have been built in the 1960s. Maybe it's a more modern house thing, or maybe we're all just too poor in Swale to afford them!

It's still 26C this morning in the back bedroom, again with the window open all night. I had the air-con going again in my room all night, but it's got an annoying habit of saying it's 16C (the lowest it'll go), even though the air temperature is still 22C or so. It then turns off (with a loud THUNK), the temperature it's measuring shoots back up and on it goes again.

I really do need proper AC, but the more I Look into it the more fiddly it gets... the outdoor compressors make a racket and will need to have an acoustic hood fitted to avoid bothering the neighbourhood with a low "thrumm" noise.

I live in a mid-terrace, new build townhouse.    I think intelligent shading and ventilation is the key - I shade all windows using blinds during the afternoon.  the moment the outside temperature drops I open all windows and doors (and I mean all) in the house, get two fans going by the windows and turn on all extractor fans in kitchen, bathrooms etc and open loft hatch.  Has been peaking at about 28-29 on top floor, but drops to about 23-24 by around 11pm, by doing this.  Anything over 24 is the point where it starts getting uncomfortable for me to sleep -  it has been higher in previous years when e.g. we've been out all day and didn't get back to ventilate till late - then I just go to sleep with the fan directly on me (and usually wake up about 3am too cold!).

I actually think the persistent of the heat has made this seem more bearable generally presumably by acclimatisation, especially as the heat (here in the SE) has peaked gradually. I definitely felt hotter in shorter hot spells e.g. last June.
