It's a dry, clear, cool and fresh night here in Edinburgh with the wind having died down by quite a lot since earlier on. In fact, I'm looking outside at just after midnight and you wouldn't think that it was this time of the night because although the skies are starry enough to the south, the sky to the north is almost as light as it would normally be during the day.

Edinburgh At Midnight

In fact, if you look at the above picture, you would think that it was either just before sunrise or just after sunset. However, that is actually an example of what midnight looks like here in Edinburgh under clear skies at this time of the year. What is actually happening here is that the nights are so short at this time of the year that twilight actually lasts all the way through the night so that the above photo has been taken at a time during the night when it is actually just about as dark as what it gets all night at this time of year.

That is the kind of scene which I am able to look out to just now as we currently have a clear night. That might not sound like a big deal but these were the sorts of scenes which I was never really getting a chance to see not all that long ago because of all of the easterly muck which was around then. Now with that out of the way, it is nice to be able to see those sorts of scenes once again.

Anyway, the temperature at midnight was 9.7ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 10.1ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The Sun appears to be shining here in Edinburgh, but it is shining through a continuous layer of medium level cloud which has managed to reduced the intensity of this sunshine by enough to ensure that this is not enough for that to be picked up as any sort of actual recorded sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

The result of this, is that we are back once again to that all too familiar story that we have seen all too often during the last month or so, of there being nothing in the way of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am (it is clear now, that we are never going to get to get any decent sunshine total for this time of the day).

Although it is nothing like as windy this morning as it was yesterday, that wind has never completely gone away and so it is still fairly windy this morning as well.

Last night's minimum temperature was 9.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 10.0ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was 11.3ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 11.7ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A fair and dry day with good - if a little hazy - sunshine. The 20 C is feeling very pleasantly warm in the moderate south west breeze.

The perfect Summer's day in my books.

Once again, the annual June permacast has re-commenced as this morning has mostly descended into yet another depressing grey nothingness with just 12 minutes of sunshine having been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

The temperatures are also very disappointing for the time of year and so, the temperature at 12 noon was 13.1ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 14.6ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

22C here, bit of a breeze and the warmth of the sun attenuated by a thin layer of high cloud. Still getting used to this new westerly regime and having to look above the cumulus layer at other layers.

The weekend looks a bit crap, which is a shame.

We may well have changed the weather pattern recently but in this part of the world, the lack of any sort of weather in this part of the world that is even remotely interesting goes on. Storm Hector generated a bit of interest yesterday and there were some events in the news which occurred as a result of the high winds which we got from that. However, wind speeds are only one aspect of the weather and when you take that out of the picture, even Storm Hector has failed to deliver anything that is remotely interesting.

What's happening is we have predominately grey skies for most of the time with little or no rainfall, and that to me is the most boring thing around when it comes to the weather (or the lack of any sort of weather as what seems to be the case just now). This lack of recent rainfall is clearly having an effect because when I am walking about now, all that I am seeing are grassy areas which are dying away and turning more into a yellowish-brown colour due to that lack of rain and yet today's weather once again is doing absolutely nothing to change any of that (it is as though the weather Gods don't even care).

For most of today, we have continued to remain in a permacast hell with almost constant grey skies. There has been a few brighter moments with the Sun appearing at times, but this has resulted in the rather pathetic total of just 54 minutes of sunshine being recorded for the whole of today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 5pm this afternoon.

The temperatures haven't exactly been exciting either with today's maximum temperature coming out at a rather cool and disappointing 15.6ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 17ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 16.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 5pm this afternoon was 15.0ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 15.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Evening

We appear to be settling into a SE coastal summer pattern, whereby the light to moderate WSW'ly breeze keeps cloud well inland and the coasts remain remarkably sunny. Today was no exception.

This evening has just carried on that same old monotonous grey nothingness with just occasional patches of blue sky in the odd locations. There were a few very brief appearances by the Sun as well, but not enough to result in any further actual recorded sunshine. This means that in the end, the really abysmal total of just 54 minutes of sunshine was recorded for the entire day at Edinburgh Gogarbank which is absolutely pathetic!!

Meanwhile, the temperature at 10pm tonight was 11.2ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 11ºC at Edinburgh Airport and 11.8ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
