Snow lying this morning at our place in Highland Perthshire at around 100 mtrs asl.

Even a few flakes in the showers reaching me here in Dundee.

Heavy drifting on the hills will probably bring lasting snow to the snow patch gullies though there will likely be a general thaw to the open slopes on Sunday with the heavy rain and higher temperatures.

Flew up from Glasgow to Orkney this afternoon - quite a bit of snow on the hilltops in the West.

73 snow patches survived in the Scottish Highlands this year, the biggest total since 1994. Lots of new snow lying now though more needed further down before lift served skiing gets underway I think.

Following last nights very mild weather the snow cover has really taken a hammering on the tops.

There is still plenty snow in the valley so I guess they are pretty white. Going to lose a lot in the next few days though.

Took a ride up the Cairngorm funicular today.  Good bit of snow around but not quite enough for skiing.

Can we get back to what the models are doing to many posts on cairngorms

No. 

It is nice to see at least some of the ski centres (the Lcht and Cairngorm) open over the last couple of days and with the upcoming spell of weather there should be a net snow gain/consolidation which is good news for the slopes.

Glenshhe and Clencoe planning to open uplift tomorrow so that should be all 5 Scottish ski centres up and running for this season.

This picture was taken from the shores of Loch Morlich on Wednesday, just a few hours after the most incredible thunderstorms had swept through. Hard to believe it was the same day!

Cairngorm

After 2 very snowy years in the highlands, this is a much more normal year in terms of snow patches. These patches on the north side of Caringorm normally disappear by early August, and it's just the usual suspects high in the NE facing corries of mountains such as Braeriach and Ben Nevis are most likely to last until lying snow of the new winter returns.

There are still quite a few snow patches deep in the central Cairngorms east of Ben Macdui, but again quite normal for this time of year.

The late August snow survey has been done and 82 snow patches have been recorded. This is a lot less than the last two years but comparable to 2008, 2012 and 2013. Remains to be seen how many of these make it through until lasting snows start.
