Also on same page, if you scroll down, a story about Rejkavik's highest temp since 2008 (21.6C), recorded 26/7/17. 23.6 also recorded inland  at Thingvellir. This could tie in with the glacial melting said to be responsible for these earthquakes, and the prospect of flooding.

That article is essentially about 2 days out of date for the very latest developments (overnight)

It is possible  the temperatures would have had some impact however I suspect some form of volcanic/geothermal component may be involved due to significant increases in conductivity in the river affected.

There are unconfirmed reports that Popocatepetl has erupted following the earthquake in Mexico.

Trying to check if it is true.

It's being widely reported, but all I can see confirmed is a bit of smoke, which isn't really as sensational as some sites are click-baiting for.

It'd be interesting if it did go full Pinatubo, though...

I have come across this:

https://texasborderbusiness.com/breaking-popocatepetl-volcano-explodes-7-1-magnitude-earthquake-hits-mexico-city/

But the headline (Popocatepetl explodes after earthquake) does nto match the report underneath, which talks about a plume of smoke.

I guess some internet sites put anything in a headline to get the traffic.

Yeah, they got a click from me, too  As did the Express but, once I'd waded through several headlines about Diana (Princess of hearts and whales) and long range weather forecasts for both an Arctic winter and a mild washout winter, it said pretty much the same thing.

Popocatepetl has been erupting on and off since 1994 after a dormant period since 1947, and frequently since 2012. Having said that, I agree with recent posts from Maunder and Saint.

Anyway horrible earthquake; 225 people killed so far, including school children by collapsing primary school.

There was in fact an explosion at Popocatepetl today, according to this video;

As I've posted on the Winter thread, Mount Agung in Indonesia set to blow:

I am due to be in Bali a week on Thursday and watching Agung like a hawk. It's a pretty dangerous volcano and infamous for large eruptions.

Don't forget your camera

It looks like there is a significant chance of an eruption in the coming days but sometimes these periods of activity happen then no eruption takes place. If I was pushed I would say that na eruption is more likely than not.

Yes that too!

On a serious note, do keep a close eye on developments as things might happen quickly.

I'm struggling to find any live data feeds so it is hard to see how things are progressing.

Obviously depends on where on Bali you would be going, but most of the tourist areas seem well away from the "danger zone". I would imagine the real issue would be flights becoming grounded if an eruption were to occur.

Yes we are going to Nusa Dua, which is 78km from Agung. The volcano last erupted in 1963, it actually did not produce much ash at first, it really got going though and became a VE 5 eruption. Therefore our biggest threat is the Ash cloud, ash deposits were recorded up to 1,000 km away and speculation that Denpesar airport would have been mostly closed for a year if the 1963 event was to occur now. The thought of having a few extra days by the pool in Bali is rather appealing, a year could be an issue 😉 I will check out the suits though just in case. Will keep you updated on developments. A lot of people from Perth are in the same boat as Bali is our local holiday resort.

The aviation warning code has been updated to orange today, so it’s still okay but they are obviously a bit concerned about potential impacts from ash associated with an eruption. Seismic activity is still ongoing with a (magmatic?) quake of magnitude 4.2 this morning adding to the growing evidence of a potential eruption.

Well, if you wanted to stop an eruption, a Daily Express shock-horro headline should do the trick

I’d love to see more data from around the area and I hope for research purposes the data is being collected in large quantities. I think an eruption is very likely but there is still a chance it may come to nothing. The worst scenario is that people get “bored” of the waiting and go back to their homes just before an eruption occurs.

Agung, Bali, has begun belching steam and sulphurous fumes as fissures have been observed at the crater;

Gunung Merapi (Central Java) and Gunung Kelud (East Java) are the ones I keep an eye on in case they start showing signs of life.. They are very dangerous and I have family in the region.

But Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes, so wherever you go you're not too far away from one ! This image looking east through Java towards Bali gives a good idea of how volcanoes have formed the backbone of Indonesia.

They are awesome places to visit and if anyone is ever in the region, the 2 hour drive to the top of the Bromo Caldera in East Java to see the sunrise is an incredible experience...
