Over the last few months, rainfall amounts have been very variable across the UK with many areas still very much in a drought situation whilst many parts of the north and west of the UK in particular have been much wetter without any issues whatsoever as regards to water scarcity.
During the summer, many parts of England went through at least one entire month without even a single drop of rain being recorded. These areas had at least a little bit of rain during September but in those areas which are in drought, the September rainfall hasn't been anything like enough to properly overcome that in many areas and with high pressure still being very persistent over the near continent, a lot of the rain which is falling is still not really getting through to those areas which need it the most.
Whether that happens this month or not is a different matter though. The models are still showing no real signs of that for now but with a very powerful El Nino event very much in evidence, there is a lot of speculation that this autumn could well become progressively wetter over time as we get further into, with that trend also continuing into the coming winter.
In addition to that, October is also our wettest month of the year on average according to the 1991-2020 averages and here in Edinburgh, September was actually only our first wetter than average month of this year. It will therefore be interesting to see whether or not, there is a trend towards wetter weather as this month wears on but regardless of how all of that pans out, this is the very place to report those all important rainfall totals for this month at your location.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
