The rain isn't persistent here and is rather showery in nature, but it has led to a total of 4.8 mm of rain being recorded so far at Gogarbank along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens as at 7am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 13.09°C at Gogarbank and 13.64°C at the botanic gardens, so last night was a rather warm one once again.

There was a drier slot earlier in the day and it's not raining here just now, but there has been further rain during the day since my last report on here which has been heavy at times, amounting to a total of 10.8 mm at Gogarbank so far for this particular event, along with 10.2 mm at the botanic gardens.

Even with that, this summer is still going to end up being substantially drier than average with this month also likely to be slightly drier than average. Regardless of what happens tomorrow though (which will be the very last day of this month and this summer), this month will go down as our wettest month of this summer. It is currently our wettest month since March and our third wettest month of this year so far. Depending on what happens by the end of tomorrow, there is even still a chance of this month being our wettest month of this year so far.

In the end, the really dismal total of just 18 minutes (0.3 hours) of sunshine was recorded for the whole of today at Gogarbank.

With all of that going on, today was a bit cooler than of late and today's maximum temperature was 18.11°C at Gogarbank and just 17.88°C at the botanic gardens.

Today is the start of not just a brand new month, but also a brand new season (meteorologically of course, as astronomical autumn doesn't start until the autumn equinox which is later on this month) and this autumn has started off on a fairly bright note with plenty of sunshine and a temperature of around 13°C here in Edinburgh.

On Sunday evening I was at friends in Boroughbridge, N Yorks and we had a couple of big storms, lots of overhead purple fork lightning and crashing thunder!

The earlier part of today was windy with gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank reaching 34 mph from the WSW, although those winds have now died down a bit.

There was also the odd very brief shower around earlier on in a day which got increasingly cloudy over time.

However, it wasn't really until the early part of this evening that we then finally got a band of heavy rain moving through. That rain was very heavy for a while, but very brief and amounting to just 3.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 2.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Even though we are no longer in meteorological summer, daytime temperatures are still continuing to very readily reach 20°C on most days and even when that doesn't happen, we are always very close to that as it still continues to refuse to properly cool down here. Today was yet another example of that and so, today's maximum temperature still reached 19.37°C at Gogarbank and 19.15°C at the botanic gardens.

In the end though, a total of only 1.6 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Gogarbank.

I've noticed this occuring quite frequently this Spring and Summer

19.1, dew 17.2; the overnight low was 18.7 and yesterday's high was 21.6 - temperatures really didn't fall much overnight!
