Most of today was overcast and gloomy but it did brighten up a bit by this evening with a little bit of late sunshine at times, albeit with a lot of cloud still around. In the end, the really abysmal total of just 0.4 hours (24 minutes) of sunshine was recorded for the whole of today at Gogarbank but even with that, more sunshine has now finally been recorded during this summer than the 1991-2020 summer average which means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this summer will now go down as being sunnier than average. That was always going to be the case but getting over that finishing line has been a real struggle and we've only just managed than by the skin of our teeth as I wrote.

With today's sunshine total being so abysmal once again, that is probably now the final nail in the coffin in terms of our chances of this month being sunnier than average. There are only 3 days left of this month and in order for this month to be sunnier than average, we would need to averaging at least 9.86 hours of sunshine per day over that period. Given that even our sunniest day of this month so far has resulted in only 9.4 hours of sunshine being recorded here, that is very unlikely to happen.

As I write though, it's actually a bit warmer than at this time last night with the temperature currently at around 17°C here in Edinburgh.

But the front looks like it's fragmenting as it moves east.

It looks as though a large part of the Country may miss the heaviest of the rain with a bit of a gap formed SW to NE from approx Weymouth through to East Anglia although much will depend on whether you catch any heavy subsequent showers following behind.

Some cloud has built up over the course of the day but today is much sunnier than of late overall with a total of 4.9 hours of sunshine at Gogarbank as at 1pm BST (12:00 UTC).

With that, we also already have our 20+°C maximum in the bag which we usually always get, or come very close to getting these days and with England now being so much cooler than of late, Edinburgh is actually listed as one of the warmest places in the whole of the UK today according to roostweather.com.

According to that site, the warmest place in the UK is currently a place called Chivenor but that is with a temperature of only 21.0°C. Meanwhile, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are shown in 6th place on that list with a temperature which is only 0.8°C cooler than the temperature at Chivenor.

Not too bad. You must feel the sense of relief that I do that the drought may be over but another 100mm required to get back to where we should be. So far, 5.6mm but hopefully if we get a couple of showers I can beat the 6.4mm of the 27th.

17.7mm at Chilgrove today, and a steady fall so it soaked in

5.6mm - a veritable flood! Just 2.2mm here of varied light rain and drizzle, with a fair bit of sunshine this afternoon. I think I'm beating you on monthly rainfall (24.4mm) but you're beating me on annual rainfall (282mm). 

I think of the posters with rain gauges we are the driest. Stayed at 5.6mm with all of the subsequent showers (like at Lords) conveniently finding a way to miss me. Yes 310mm for  the YTD and 14.5mm for the month.

19.7c is the max and now, my consecutive 20c days stops at 78 days unless something crazy happens... the sun came out too late to keep the run going.

EDIT - a bit of evening sun pushed the temp up to exactly 20c at 18:46 so the run continues
