Swanston is around 200m amsl and tends to have much higher minimum temperatures than the airport for instance that sits in the Forth Valley

We have a band of heavy rain moving towards us on the cold front which will eventually end the English heatwave

Imagine a couple of months of that, and it's what we've had down here. It's draining! 

It's 17.8 here, dew 12.9, after a low of 15.7. Yesterday's high was 27.8, the North Sea thankfully keeping it around 6C cooler than a few miles inland. 

Incidentally Langdon Bay, the other side of Kent, didn't go below 22C from what I can see - exceptionally warm for there. And both Manston and Langdon are at 23 as of 6 AM, it's going to be a very hot day...

That downpour resulted in at least 3.0 mm of rain being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with at least 3.4 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh although I had to wait until the 07z raw BUFR/SYNOP data came through for anything at all to actually show up in that regard. That data only came through whilst I was in the middle of constructing this post and I was very nearly going to say that there wasn't any recorded rainfall here.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 14.59°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 15.45°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which has also at least provisionally set a new highest minimum temperature date record at the botanic gardens by 0.05°C with the old record for that going all the way back to 1975.

Today has started off rather damp and overcast here in Edinburgh after that earlier rain which has now cleared away.

Currently around 19°C here in Edinburgh and the funny thing is that if today's maximum temperature somehow manages to reach or exceed 25°C, an official heatwave will then be recorded here in Edinburgh. On this occasion though, I'm not expecting that to happen although unlike on the last occasion, we can't blame the North Sea for that this time. However, the BBC are still going for a maximum of around 22°C here in Edinburgh today with the Met Office going for a maximum of around 23°C. That is actually an upgrade on other recent forecasts for today and with that, it would only need today to be a couple of degrees warmer than it was forecast to be in order for our first official heatwave since 2022 here in Edinburgh to then be recorded, so I would still not completely rule that out just yet.

Lows of 19c.

Temp expected to peak at around 24c around 1-2pm, then decline through the afternoon as cooler air moves in.

Potential for light showers later which more importantly heralds much cooler spell but little if any rain for several days yet.

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature rose above 20°C as early as 9am BST this morning and even up to around 21°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, but then refused to rise any further after that. As a result, I can now safely say that there will once again be no official heatwave here in Edinburgh.

Although the increasingly long wait for that elusive first official heatwave here in Edinburgh since 2022 goes on though, it has been a completely different story at Charterhall down in the Scottish Borders. Down there, the temperature reached 24.2°C as late in the day as around 1pm BST which is also below the heatwave threshold, but close enough to it to mean that the official heatwave there could still be officially confirmed as continuing into what would be its fourth day once today's maximum temperature for there is confirmed later on by the 18z raw BUFR/SYNOP data.

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature has now dropped to just below 20°C at all of the local stations with a much fresher feel with the temperature at Charterhall having now dropped back to around 23°C.

It's 33C upstairs, 26C downstairs, so another fun night sweating and trying to sleep beckons.

The last time this happened, it was the North Sea which was responsible  for that but that wasn't the case this time. Instead of that, it is the Atlantic which we have to blame for that on this occasion by bringing through a cold front a bit too quickly to allow any official heatwave to actually be recorded here.

Down in the Borders though, it has been a completely different story as today's maximum temperature at Charterhall was 25.09°C which means that the official heatwave down there is still ongoing at the end of what is now its 4th day, although even that is still a bit cooler than of late (Charterhall actually had its second hottest day of the year so far yesterday with a maximum temperature of 29.25°C, and with yesterday just missing out on being the actual hottest day of the year so far there by around 0.1°C).

However, even Charterhall has cooled down a bit now and because of that, I am now expecting today to be the last day of the heatwave down here.

Meanwhile, the temperature across both Edinburgh and the Borders is currently 18/19°C here in Edinburgh and around 19°C at Charterhall with some decent sunny spells to end the day here in Edinburgh, albeit with some cloud still around as well.

Looks like Aberdeen, Stirling and Fife have hit 20 C
