Now that we have just entered into the start of another brand new month, it is time for another brand new thread.
July was quite a month. I have read that England and Wales provisionally had their driest July on record and I can see from last month’s thread that some locations even managed to record a completely rainless month in July.
Across the UK as a whole, it was the third driest July on record and although Scotland wasn’t as dry as England and Wales, it was still drier than average up here with some parts of Eastern Scotland placed at significant water scarcity status by SEPA, resulting in water extraction restrictions being imposed as a result.
Indeed, it is only a very small part of the extreme NW of Scotland which actually had a wetter than average month in July.
Fortunately, the models have backed away from what was looking like a very dry period ahead and are now going for a much wetter period ahead in general although most of that rain is still likely to be in the NW of the UK.
If that comes off though. even those parched southern areas which have gone for so long without any rain, might get at least a little bit of rain. That is probably not going to be enough to alleviate the situation altogether but every little bit is still better than nothing at the end of the day.
Lack of rainfall causes many issues not just for ourselves or for our economy, but also for the natural environment around us, so let’s hope that this is the month in which those areas which that rainfall the most, actually get it.
