I reckon that the increasing wind from the south is probably actually helping to keep the North Sea out of things as this is probably helping to prevent any local sea breezes from being able to form which would otherwise be coming in from off the North Sea. Our highest temperatures of the year often occur with the wind coming from the south or SSW and this can happen even when it is very windy.

The downside though, is the continued cloud cover which is once again likely to prevent any of the big sunshine totals from being recorded here which I was expecting to see. This month is already running duller than average here and if we can't even get any decent sunshine totals out of a spell of weather such as this one, there will then be absolutely no chance whatsoever, of this month being sunnier than average in the end.

I can also confirm that a new date record has just provisionally been set at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with the temperature currently at 26.1°C there (the previous date record for there was only 24.9°C with that record going all the way back to 1983).

We're not likely to see a new all time August record though, especially with it still being cloudy as that record is currently 30.0°C and the temperature over the next day or so is unlikely to be over 27°C or so. Nevertheless, that is actually a record which goes all the way back to 1975 and so, it is remarkable to realise that even in this era of ongoing climate change, we have gone all that time without a single 30+°C maximum being recorded in August at the botanic gardens, especially given that our last 30+°C maximum was only recorded in July 2022.

However, a lot of that is probably due to the fact that the botanic gardens (along with the airport) are usually far more influenced by the North Sea than any of the other Edinburgh stations to such an extent that this particular station will often miss out on really high temperatures which are being recorded nearby at Edinburgh Gogarbank (just as an example).

That's not enough to make today our actual hottest day of the year (although today is by far, our hottest day of this month so far), but it is at the very least, our third hottest day of the day so far and depending on what the 18z raw BUFR/SYNOP data says about the actual maximum temperature, today could even be our second hottest day of the year so far and what makes that even more remarkable is the fact that this is happening despite an ongoing lack of sunshine with quite a lot of cloud around. In order to get our second hottest day of this year so far, today's maximum temperature there only needs to be 27.3°C or above (that temperature occurred on 8 July 2026) whereas for today to actually be our hottest day of the year, today's maximum temperature there would need to be 28.7°C or above (that occurred on 23 June 2026).

The temperature also reached around 27°C at Edinburgh Airport but because of the lack of any North Sea influence, Edinburgh Gogarbank was slightly cooler than those two above mentioned temperatures with the highest temperature so far being 26.46°C However, the hotspot here in Edinburgh is actually Swanston where as Jerry has said, it has been the second hottest day of this year so far.
