All day, a line of heavy showers have formed over in Fife and streamed SE over East Lothian, some places have had a lot of rain

I was premature with the max here today and it has ended up as 16.1°C. Currently it is 14.1°C and sunny.

Meanwhile, Edinburgh has rain or showers every day and 17 - 22 C. I've given up hope of seeing any heat this year, it's an autumnal evening up here, gloomy and quite wet

Today's actual maximum temperatures in Edinburgh according to my usual sources were 20.62°C at Gogarbank, 20°C at the airport, 21.39°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and 20.1°C at Swanston. This means that your figure is an actual maximum temperature, you were clearly living in the coolest part of Edinburgh today.

Down here in the Borders though, today's maximum temperature at Charterhall was only 18.61°C which was a little bit cooler than of late although it doesn't feel like that just now.

You might not have been able to sit in your garden today due to all of the showery activity, but it has been a completely different story in Hawick and since I don't have a garden to sit in back at my main base in Edinburgh, today could well have been a reversal of roles in that regard.

We had a bit of rain earlier on this morning, but it has been completely bone dry since then apart from the odd spotty shower, This meant that I was able to sit in my Mum's gardens without any problems today even though it has still been a bit windy here (my Mum's garden is in a location which is well sheltered from those winds). That was something which I enjoyed really well even without there being any actual interesting weather here and even this evening, the Sun is still refusing to stop shining here.

Yet just along the road at Charterhall, a total of 19.6 mm of rain has been recorded since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning just to show how much different the weather can be even at two different locations which are very close to each other.

As I write, it's currently around 16°C here in the Borders.

More in the way of cloud here, and a refreshing light WNW'ly breeze. 17.6, dew 13.1. The overnight low was 17.1 and yesterday's high was much higher than forecast, at 27.7.

Several inland personal weather stations recorded an air frost last night.

How this town of Hawick somehow managed to completely avoid yesterday's rain from the latter part of the morning onwards is totally beyond my comprehension, especially given that massively large total at Charterhall which is more or less only along the road from my current location.

That appears to have taught me a few lessons. First of all, I should probably ignore what the weather is like elsewhere because regardless of what that is like, our weather is still never going to be any different from what it has been whilst I've been here with our maximum temperatures always in the low 20s°C at least even when it's forecast to be much cooler.

The second part of that is that I should ignore any forecast which suggests that our weather will somehow be different from how it has been, because those forecasts will never actually verify in the end in this part of the world where I am.

It just seems that wherever I go, the weather just keeps on refusing to change from one day to the next regardless of the actual forecasts, and regardless of what it is like elsewhere. This means that although this week's weather is labelled as being changeable, there is absolutely nothing changeable about our weather whatsoever where I am.

This morning has started off with the usual mix of cloud and sunshine here and I'm not expecting that to change in any way during the course of today because it never does now.

I was following the rainfall radar yesterday John, there was a narrow stripe of bright echoes running NW to SE from Fife, North and East Edinburgh, East Lothian down to the easternmost Borders and down into Northumberland for several hours. Hawick sat just west of this....close run thing though, you almost got a soaking!

I might have almost got a soaking but I didn’t and that is all that matters. From the above, I can see that I probably would have got a soaking if I had still been in NW Edinburgh at the time, so it’s just typical of my luck that the more interesting weather has once again completely avoided my actual location and gone elsewhere instead after having gone to my main base in NW Edinburgh because it somehow appears to know that I’m not actually there just now.

Just for a change, I can actually say ditto to that. After a sunny morning, it didn’t take long before it clouded over with some drizzly showers which lasted for a while into this afternoon.

Normal service was then resumed after that with the usual dry weather but without any sunshine this time. By that time, I had decided to go for a walk, so no garden today.

Yep, there’s always a 20+°C maximum somewhere in the vicinity these days, regardless of what the temperatures are forecast to be. I also wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the sunshine came back here before too long.
