Yep!! It doesn’t matter how it all pans out now because the end result is always the same anyway, and that is why it’s all just become boring and repetitive now.

Nevertheless, there’s been little to no sunshine here in Hawick this afternoon (at least, not yet and I still wouldn’t completely rule out the Sun suddenly bursting through here later on) and the temperature is currently around 21°C here.

As at 7:40pm BST (18:40 UtC) this evening, a total of 8.2 hours of sunshine had been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank. This means that more sunshine has now been recorded there this month than the 1991-2020 July average which means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will now go down as being sunnier than average there.

This month was never going to be anything else other than sunnier than average and this just marks  a return to normal in this new climate as most spring and summer months are usually always sunnier than average these days anyway.

Currently sunny down here in Hawick with a temperature of around 18°C.

It's sunny and calm here, 22.3, dew 17.2 and it already feels damned hot, I think the humidity has something to do with it. It's going to be in the high 20s later - some drizzle would be fantastic! It's been dry all of July and though there's meant to be a little rain on Sunday I don't hold out much hope.

It's going to be a cruddy week and a half (at least) for sleeping...

Down here in Hawick, it’s a new day but with the same old lack of any weather which is any different from other recent days although there is a bit more wind and it’s a little bit cooler just now than at this same time yesterday with a temperature of only around 16°C.

I’m not sure whether or not it’s as windy as that here but it’s windy nevertheless.

over at Charterhall which is the closest major station to here which is similar in nature to Gogarbank in Edinburgh though, the winds are gusting up to around 31.1 mph from the WSW.

It’s also warmer there with a temperature of just above 20°C so the warm air is still not all that far away.

Here in Hawick, it’s hard to gauge what the actual temperature is as there are no major stations nearby but it’s probably around 18°C here.

Currently warm at 24°C with some hazy sunshine, made more hazy by smoke. 

With the exception of the 5th of November it is the only time I have seen the official weather reports showing “smoke” as the weather.

Highland wildfire smoke blows into Aberdeen - 59 miles away

No smoke down here, though the sun has been a bit hazy at times due to high cloud. It's the warmest it's been for a while, 27.4/dew 17.6, the high being 28.0.

It’s interesting how a change in wind direction can have such a big effect. It has changed again now and the skies have more or less completely cleared of smoke (although it is now cloudy).

Edit: And just like that, it’s back again!

Similar enough here, we have a wildfire on Slievenamon mountain with smoke visible(and smellable), even though it's 25 miles or so away. 

Sunny and reaching 24c earlier this afternoon. 

I looked at those temperatures quite late on this afternoon at around 4pm and when I saw that the temperatures in Edinburgh were still only at around 18°C at that time, my thinking was that Edinburgh would surely not be seeing a 20+°C maximum this time but no, because that is always too much to ask for now and the data has shown this to be the case once again.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 19.54°C so it is true that Edinburgh Gogarbank has failed to recorded a 20+°C maximum for only the first time since 14 July 2026 which was 10 days ago, but only just and no more.

However, today's maximum temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh reached 20.23°C which means that Edinburgh has still experienced yet another 20+°C maximum in the end as the temperatures still continue to refuse to properly cool down.

Today was therefore really just the opposite of what was experienced during that recent period in which the north of Edinburgh was cooled down by that easterly muck whilst the south of Edinburgh saw 20+°C maximums every day. Today, it was just the other way round with the north of Edinburgh now being warmer than the south of Edinburgh.

I don't think that the temperature here in Hawick quite made it to 20°C today but the Scottish Borders still officially had a 20+°C maximum anyway as the temperature at its only main weather station at Charterhall reached a maximum of  21.62°C.

As for sunshine, that no longer matters as the criteria for this month being sunnier than average had already been met yesterday.

Currently around 18°C here and since the temperature in Edinburgh is also still around 18/19°C as I write, it no longer feels so cool after all as it did earlier on.

Smoke from the Cairngorm fire was present for much of the day but then it got dramatically worse in Banchory around 3:30-4:00pm today. It was the worst I have ever seen; thick, acrid smoke, visibility 500m or less and flakes of ash falling. It was actually quite scary. It cleared quickly just before I arrived back in Aboyne around 6:00pm but there is still a faint smell of smoke in the house even now. And this is a relatively small fire compared to the monstrous ones affecting France and Spain just now. 

Meanwhile in Edinburgh we've just had a brief period of light to moderate rain! Let's hope for rain on the Cairngorms!

Upon doing an AI search on that, I discovered this is something called rain which we used to get on a regular basis, which we hardly ever get any more and which we haven’t had for a very long time.

This is very much the equivalent of what happens when we go through a lengthy permacast. hell and then finally see the Sun for the first time in a long time, thereby resulting in that appearing to some form of UFO or very strange bright object in the sky.

I will check the actual data tomorrow but if this has resulted in even a little bit of recorded rainfall at any of the usual weather stations (that can even be as little as 0.2 mm of rain), that will then finally be enough to break the St. Swithin’s Day legend at long last which has gone on for nearly 10 days now. Whether it has rained on St. Switin’s Day or not, this is probably the longest ever period of time that I can remember without that legend being broken.
