(I had the best sleep I've had in weeks last night too - great stuff, and a reminder of how our climate has changed in the past 30 years or so!)

I'm not in the least bit surprised as it felt really warm out there earlier on this morning when I was out and about.

Furthermore, this has now become pretty much the norm as we just don't get changeable weather here any more like we used to.

Today will actually be my last day here in Edinburgh before I head down to Hawick in the Scottish Borders to spend a couple of weeks with my family (I won't then be back here until Monday 3 August 2026). Normally in the past, I would have been looking with great interest during that time at any updates from either yourself or Noodle Doodle to see what the weather is like here but that is pretty much a waste of time now as our weather during the spring and summer months in particular, is hardly ever all that different any more from how it is just now which means that I pretty much already know what the weather is going to be like here during that time. That is why the weather in general just isn't as interesting as it used to be, and why it has all just become rather boring now.

Today feels very different without the hard edge of wind off the sea, we have a light breeze off the land and in the sunshine we have reached 23 C.........same as central London 😲

Currently 24.3c.

It probably feels very strange in a way, for the southerners to not be getting their usual 30+°C maximums and tropical nights at the moment (although we all know that this is due to the high pressure being to our west now instead of to our east, and therefore feeding in what is actually a cooler air mass which is just being warmed up a bit in this part of the world by the very strong sunshine and a slight Foehn Effect).

Not having that wind from off the North Sea is making a big difference as well because as a result of that, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has now had two 20+°C maximums in a row after going through an entire week without a single 20+°C maximum being recorded there due to those winds from off the North Sea.

As for today though, today's warmest place in Edinburgh is still Gogarbank with a current temperature of 23.6°C but none of the other stations here in Edinburgh which even includes the botanic gardens in this instance, are very far behind that.

Finally, there is also some cloud around as I write which means that today isn't going to go down as being completely sunny, but there has probably been more than enough sunshine around during the course of today to mean that today's sunshine totals are probably still going to be decent enough anyway.

EDIT:

One thing which I forgot to add is that there aren't very many major stations in the Borders and for that reason, I wish that there was more.  The nearest WMO SYNOP/BUFR station to Hawick is at Charterhall which is quite a long distance away from there, which means that any reports which I post on here on these threads (that will probably be this thread and the next two threads after that as DEW always starts a new thread every Sunday and the day which I will be coming back on will a Monday) will probably just be based on rough estimated readings from my various apps.

Nevertheless, I am taking a laptop with me which will allow me to still be able to access my python scripts and the data which is produced by them. That way, I should still be able to submit my monthly stats report at the usual time on its own usual separate thread whilst I'm down there.

Today wasn't as sunny overall as it has been in other recent days but as at 7:40pm BST (18:40 UTC) this evening, a total of 9.0 hours of sunshine had still been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

The winds have now switched round more towards the west (albeit with a slight northerly component to that still in evidence) but this the first time for quite a long time that there has even been any westerly component to our wind direction.

With that, there is still a lot of cloud around to our north in particular but it's a very sticky evening with the temperature at the botanic gardens still holding up at around 22°C even at this late stage of the evening (looks like we're now making up for time lost there, by those North Sea winds in recent days), and around 20°C across Edinburgh more generally.

Tomorrow is forecast be a bit cooler but still above 20°C before warming up yet again to around 25°C here by Wednesday with the latest Met Office forecasts continuing to show no signs of any proper cooldown here any time soon, and that is why I'm not expecting to be reporting anything different in the Borders during the next week or so from what I'm reporting here just now.

Beautiful blue skies yet again!

Yep!! That was what I was expecting all along.

I arrived in Hawick a few hours ago and there is still some cloud around, but also plenty of sunny spells.

Currently around 23°C here and feeling even hotter than that.

In addition to that, today was also sunnier than yesterday with a total of 10.6 hours of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7:40pm BST (18:40 UTC).

Down here in Hawick, the earlier clouds have completely disappeared to leave us with a completely sunny evening and a current temperature of around 18°C.
