Combine harvesters in action today - saw one working on a cereal field near Chichester, heard more as I was walking through the woods.

Traditionally, farmers begin harvesting their crops towards the end of August and in early September. [BBC Countryfile]

In some cool and wet years (remember those?) I've seen harvest (in East Anglia) as late as early September

Sussex is the one to watch at the moment. Official stations - Wiggonholt 28.8 C at 1400, Gatwick 29 C at 1420. Unofficial - 29.3 C on my north-facing wall in Chichester

Some hold for better price but risky storage costs etc.

Other thing of importance around here is that water tankers are pulled into the field that is currently being harvested because of risk of machinery getting hot and starting a fire in open cereal fields a good first line defence.

Touch and go for another 30C. A much cooler day than forecast with many places across the south struggling to get above 25C let alone 30.

Temp is still climbing here, 28.6 is the highest of the day.

And there it is, good old Heathrow with 30.0C at 1620Z.

Or perhaps not. Weatherobs said 30 but Ogimet says the 1620 reading is 29.0.

Interesting tweet from met Office that the ten 30c in a row is the most since 2006 when we had 14.

28.4c the high here today, another cool one compared to of late but a bit more humid if you were out of the breeze. Back to 30 tomorrow looking likely.

Interesting to see from that tweet that 2006 made 14 days of 30C in a row. Trevor Harley says "30C was reached somewhere in the country on every day from the 16th to the 27th apart from the 23rd."

Looking at Roost Weather I can see a 13 day run from the 16th to the 28th, but not 14 days.

Heatwave score update: 38.4.

Hopefully a late entry by a manual station later to up the total. We can’t beat the big boys by crawling along with 30Cs, we need some 34s and 35s.
