20 C here now at 10:30 with hazy sun and feeling steamy after the storms

Just looking at the heatwave thread, over 30 C at 10:30 in the SE, astonishing!! 😲😱

As 35 C is widespread over England today with high humidity, how would you sweaty lot fancy a cool, breezy cloudy day at 18 C?? That's what we have in Scotland's capital today.....sadly there's been no heatwave here, not in May and not in June!

Today's maximum temperature was 20.03°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 19.63°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with a total of 9.0 mm of rain being recorded from today's thunderstorms along with 4.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

It's been a very dull day, especially towards the end of the day with yet more easterly muck now coming in from the North Sea to bring us a very dark (this makes it hard to believe that the summer solstice was only a few days ago) and foggy end to the day.

The result of this is that the rather dismal total of just 1.3 hours of sunshine were recorded for the whole of today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Given that we are now past the summer, the days are only going to shorten as we get further into the rest of this summer. One aspect of a decent summer is that it should be sunnier than average but given that it will be harder to get any big sunshine totals later on in the summer due to the shortening days, this is when we really need to be getting that sunshine if this summer is going to have the best chance of being sunnier than average in the end and at the moment, the omens don't look very good on that front.

As I write, the temperature is currently around 14°C here in Edinburgh.

A new day and we've lost the North Sea Gloom from yesterday for a warmer, softer southerly! Patches of blue in the sky.

It's already up to 18 C at 0700

As expected last night was tough... hours of laying there in bed, sweating, not sleeping, and by the times the storms started around 3 AM that was it, no chance of sleep after that!

Overcast with recent rain here (3.4mm today), still oppressive and still with the prospect of a very hot, humid day to come.

19.8, dew 18.8. Last night's low was 19.4 and yesterday's high was 35.8, with four hours above 35C and nine hours above 32C.

Having said that though, the temperature at the botanic gardens is already at arond 20°C and today is forecast to be warmer than the last couple of days (around 23°C maximum according to the Met Office).

Garden thermometer now reads 32C. 4.30pm. Steady breeze and less direct sunlight, so not too oppressive now.
