Thought I heard a couple of rumbles earlier and now the heavens have just opened out of the blue. Clouds don't even look that threatening which makes it all the more bizzare.

Just braved the greenhouse to check on my tomato and chilli plants. 45c in there and the thermometer is near the open doors at the end which is partly shaded by our large apple tree. They seem to be bearing up well as long as they get plenty of regular water

EDIT:

Now up to around 25°C at the botanic gardens as well.

There's no North Sea influence today and under those conditions, we can still get some really high temperatures even with some very strong winds. However, I don't think that today's conditions are quite right for that to happen because the winds are coming too much from the west for that and we really need those winds to back more southerly (a wind from the SSW would be enough) in order to bring those really high temperatures up from the south.

Generally though, I'm not too bothered if we don't any really high temperatures here as it's already hot enough in my flat as it is.

Temperature at the botanic gardens is now up to 25.7°C which is once again, not all that far away from the old June record which was broken yesterday and the temperature at Edinburgh is now exactly 25.0°C with Swanston now at 25.1°C.

Not too bad all given the complete lack of any southerly component to our wind direction and with yesterday having been that bit hotter still, this means that tomorrow's temperature now only needs to either match or beat today's values in order for our first official heatwave of the year to be recorded here in Edinburgh.

We topped out at 30.5c here around 3pm, slight drop to 29c at 5pm. Think we will have a bit of a cooler day tomorrow but expect Friday to be warmest of the week.
