Now up to 24.6°C at Swanston and it did briefly get up to around 25°C at Gogarbank before dropping back slightly so for now at least, my own estimate for today's maximum is looking to be spot on.

There's no North Sea influence today and under those conditions, we can still get some really high temperatures even with some very strong winds. However, I don't think that today's conditions are quite right for that to happen because the winds are coming too much from the west for that and we really need those winds to back more southerly (a wind from the SSW would be enough) in order to bring those really high temperatures up from the south.

Generally though, I'm not too bothered if we don't any really high temperatures here as it's already hot enough in my flat as it is.

Not too bad all given the complete lack of any southerly component to our wind direction and with yesterday having been that bit hotter still, this means that tomorrow's temperature now only needs to either match or beat today's values in order for our first official heatwave of the year to be recorded here in Edinburgh.

As at 7:30pm BST (18:30 UTC) this evening, a total of 11.5 hours of sunshine had been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank and that total would probably have been much higher than that had it not been for a cloudier period during the earlier part of this morning.

Even as I write, the temperature is still a very sultry 24°C here in Edinburgh and I'm absolutely sweltering in my flat once again.

The temperature is now on the rise with part cloudy skies and a gusty SE wind.

I suspect the North Sea breeze will set in today from the NE so a 30C maybe reached in the western Borders, maybe low 20's here

However, today has started off on a bright and sunny note, so this is now looking like possibly being another big effort to make up the overall sunshine deficit for this month even if the month as a whole still ends up being duller than average anyway (this was exactly what happened at the end of May as well).

With that sunshine, the temperature jumped up to around 21°C as early as around 7am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning, but the temperatures since then have been refusing to rise any further and have actually dropped slightly to just under 20°C as I write, probably as a result of that North Sea influence which is now clearly in play.

Having said that though, the temperature at Gogarbank is now up to 23.3°C and yet, the temperature at the botanic gardens has now dropped to just 18.3°C which is a difference of 5°C between those stages. Edinburgh is big in terms of its heritage, but is only small in terms of its geographical size so given that those two stations are located within that same city, that is quite a remarkable difference.

That is important because whenever I am looking up any temperature records for Edinburgh, those are usually always for the botanic gardens and this makes it unlikely that we will see any temperature records here today.

However, the various python scripts which I run to generate the various monthly, seasonal and annual stats on this forum are always for Gogarbank and given that it is warmer at that particular station, we still can't completely rule out the possibilities of an official heatwave being recorded according to those stats, even if the temperature at the botanic gardens doesn't even come close to meeting that threshold.

As a sidenote, I can report that the current temperature at Swanston 21.8°C but even that has dropped slightly from a peak of 22.6°C which was recorded at 10:03 (that's all that is given for the time on weatherlink.com, so I can't confirm whether that is BST or UTC time).
