When I look at the GFS ensembles, I keep thinking large drop (it is) but in reality the scale make its look like it’s going to turn cold, but in reality we will still be above average but more moderate temps.

Yes pretty mad to think even a 10c drop in temperature we'd still be in heatwave conditions. 

A few places are now showing 40C on Wednesday on the auto output. 

BTW I was just looking back at my saved screenshots. On Sunday 17 July the UKV actually went for 43C max on the Tuesday so it was a bit over the top! The Met auto output on the Saturday had 42C in Lincolnshire. It had the right area for the peak of the heat though.

But with more of an easterly component to the drift the heat will be pushed westwards. Cheltenham once held the all time record with 37.1C in August 1990.

It's going to be hot , but think Arpege is over doing it. My bet would be 38c ish in places like Yeovil and Pershore. 

They are utter cack - just a fan with added humidity. They might knock a degree or so off on a very hot, very low humidity day but they're generally useless in the UK and shouldn't be marketed as they are. (I had one back in 2003, all that happened was the humidity went up and black mould grew in the filters... lovely.)

A proper portable a/c is the way to go if you want spot cooling.

We bought a portable A/C unit about 5 years back at a cost of about £150.

It felt like a luxury then but we've used it every summer since and it's been worth every penny. 

That one in the link won't help anyone, it's one of the dodgiest ads-as-content I've ever seen. It looks like the sort of thing you see on YouTube ads. They could have at least pretended it was legit by adding links to the other evap coolers/portable a/c units, and 99%? That's just OTT!

Some of these runs suggest the worst day (probably Thursday) could be something like

40C max/ 25C min

in a worst case scenario

These temperatures are a problem for people without aircon and unlike 2022 we have very high temps (albeit far less bad than that) sustained for days on end.

I think some of the "it's just summer" crowd are likely to get caught out - although I also expect red warnings and, once those are issued, some schools to close etc.

Having lugged laptops across a playground in 40C in July 2022 - it's not an experience I ever want to repeat. Every breath burned, and that was frankly scary to experience.

Tues 37C, Wed 37C and Thu 37C. That is still utterly brutal to have that three days in a row.

I remember going for a walk on the 40C day, it was hard just walking around the block. What I remember most was the burning heat radiating of the ground onto my legs, it was crazy. I suspect we may see wildfires too.

The expensive ones don't work either as it's simple physics - use a "swamp cooler" in the UK and get nothing but more humidity, it's just too humid already. It's a different story if dewpoints are near zero, but they're 20C right here, right now! Mind you, people are dumb enough to spend hundreds on a Dyson fan (which just moves air around), so doubtless they'll find a market...

A portable a/c, proper cooling with a refrigerant, is the way to go. Or even split a/c (which starts at £500 ish, ex-fitting).

People were letting off Chinese lanterns in the neighbouring village last night! At least the foliage is lush and green, thanks to the recent rain we've had.

I was hoping for more of an easterly component on Tuesday, but the MetO raw still keeps a SE'ly going instead: 37C will be the 2nd warmest day here since at least 1970 if that comes off! (In 76 it topped out just over 30, apparently).
