Conclusion
May 2026 was very much a month of two halves. The first half of the month was quite cool with even an air frost being recorded making it the first month for quite a long time to have an above average number of air frosts.
However, an exceptionally hot spell of weather then followed that in the second half of the month and in the end, May 2026 was warmer than average overall as is the case in most month these days.
For the first half of the month, rainfall totals held up at around or just above average but as the weather became much warmer, it also became a lot drier and in the end, May 2026 was drier than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts although the number of rain days was above average.
Finally, the first half of May 2026 was exceptionally dull and although the second half of the month was much sunnier and more in line with the rest of the spring up until that point, that wasn't enough to give us a sunnier than average month due to what had happened in the first half of the month.
In the end, May 2026 was slightly duller than average overall although it was the only duller than average month in the spring.
