Arpege also now starting to turn up the dial, but still lagging the UKV significantly. One point worth bearing in mind is that the Met Office model suite underwent a big upgrade in January, so this is the first time we've (testing will obviously have been done with historical starting data) seen how the UKV performs in this type of scenario.

I dont rate UkV it always over does temps in heatwaves.  Arpege is normally much more accurate.

Atmosphere isn't actually that warm. What we have here is extremely strong adiabatic heating caused by extremely high static stability. I'm actually surprised the models are disagreeing so much given that the physics here is more simple than it usually is. High potential temperature with minimal mixing.

The 00z GEM is incredible for Scottish heat middle of next week, 3 consecutive days could break the UK May temp record.

Qu: met office: “It is likely that the May and Spring UK temperature records will be broken over the Bank Holiday weekend, with forecast temperatures surpassing the existing record of 32.8°C."

Note the word likely  which of course does not imply certainty but reflects unusually high confidence for an extreme event.

Not many birds about on my local Nature Reserve in the heart of the S.Essex Marshes on my walk today. This upcoming spell could be the death knell for many more with no sign of rain at least before June. Just 17mm since March 14th and the entire Spring by the looks of it. Records galore. I can't believe people don't seem to realise how serious this is. Just a blip on the National scale but locally there is a big impact.

This being the UK it will likely take 27 years and cost £8 billion.

It's looking like a remarkable spell on the way, GFS has continued to move towards UKV/MetO and now has several days of 27 here, the Saturday rain which it's been consistently showing has been downgraded and, I suspect, the MetO forecast of full sunshine will be the one that "wins".

I'm still very puzzled as to why the models are showing such heat here considering the onshore breeze that's forecast to pick up over the weekend, the MetO for example having 31C with 17mph easterlies (from a sea which is still only 13C).

The only other thing worth commenting on is just how unremarkable people seem to find such heat these days. We will perhaps see a couple of date records fall, an exceptional spell (just 12C above average here!), yet people seem to just take it for granted.

Arpege now has 34c on Monday.

Looks like the heat will last to Friday with possibly 4, 5 or 6 30c + days.

Summer here used to be 22-25C, lovely, but now people think being roasted is lovely. When it's 40C they wont - except on SM but they could be anyone from anywhere.
