I've located my safe viewing glasses and the solarscope is ready. I observed the Venus transits of June 8, 2004, and we managed to let every pupil in school see it! [Safely!] I used to have 3 solarscopes in my lab and pupils who completed work swiftly were allowed to observe sunspots briefly! During an Ofsted inspection one was asked "What has this to do with the current lesson?" He replied to the effect "Nothing sir, but you have to watch events on the Sun when they happen!" 😁

SUPER EL NIÑO, IS THE TERMINATOR TO BLAME? A super El Niño is forming in the Pacific Ocean, threatening to scramble weather worldwide. A solar physicist may have seen it coming 3 years ago using a predictive model based on "the Terminator."

A stream of solar wind has engulfed Earth blowing faster than 700 km/s (1.5 million mph). G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on May 16th as the gaseous stream exerts pressure on Earth's magnetosphere. Tonight's New Moon will provide dark skies for high-latitude auroras.

I've just been sat outside, watching the sky and it's remarkable how many satellites there are zipping overhead. At any given point, you can sometimes count three or even four in a single point of view. Of course, the Sun being at a shallow angle below the horizon at this time of year definitely makes them more visible. Contrast that to winter when even satellite orbits usually fall deeply into Earth's shadow.
