It all depends on how the cloud behaves, but many elements are in place for pretty low temperatures tonight especially in Scotland. The date record for 6th May is -5.6C and there has to be a good chance this could be broken later tonight/early tomorrow morning.

At the moment cloud is quite extensive but showing signs of thinning from the north across the central Highlands, so definitely one to watch.

Glad to see this thread - I saw a -6 on xc this morning and wondered where to report it!

NW reports -5.8 at Altnaharra (at 5AM), with -6.5 at the Cairngorm summit. On the face of it, beats the -5.6 record for the 6th but isn't there an oddity where the records are 9 to 9, so it'd go down as the minimum for the 5th rather than the 6th?

Early observations showing the date record has been broken, actually at 2 official stations; Altnaharra with -6.1C and the new station at Tomintoul with -6.7C.

Minimum temperatures read at 0900 GMT today are credited to today, 6th May - the other elements like maximum temperature and rainfall etc are "thrown back" to yesterday.

Lowest in the PWS network was -8.5C in upper Donside.

It's refreshing to see some date cold records being set for once. 😊

I've just checked the TORRO list of UK minimum temperature date records and noticed that the figure for 6th May has been updated to -7.0C at Lagganlia in 1974. It definitely wasn't that when I checked on 5th May: -5.6C at Camps Reservoir was shown as the date record. The recent minima of -6.8C at Tomintoul and -6.1C at Altnaharra are included as a side note as is the Camps Reservoir value.

So in the end we didn't get that date record!

It does make me wonder how many other potential records have been missed...
