Here in Edinburgh, the final month of the meteorological spring has just started off on the usual bright and sunny note although last night was rather chilly with the temperature dropping to or slightly below 1.85°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and to around 4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh where the temperature hasn't yet finished bottoming out as I write.

However, we have now lost that wind from off the North Sea which means that today should be warmer near to the east coast as a result. As a point of interest, I can remind everyone that on the last day of April 2025, the temperature at Gogarbank reached 23.65°C. By this time last year, a total of 3 maximums over 20°C had been recorded during 2025 up until that point in time at Gogarbank with the first of those being recorded on 12 April 2025 with a maximum temperature of 20.1°C.

As I write, we are still waiting for our first 20+°C maximum of this year at Gogarbank (although we came very close to getting that yesterday) but this might just be due to the fact that the current spell of ongoing constant dry and sunny weather took much longer to arrive this year (until around a couple of weeks ago, this had actually been a fairly wet spring here) than was the case last year. Generally, if we have not had that elusive first 20+°C maximum of the year by now, we usually always get that by the time that we get to the end of May. According to the forecasts, today is not expected to be as warm as that last day of April 2025 but nevertheless, we can't rule of the possibility of that first 20+°C maximum of the year happening as early as today as that might well end up happening.

As I write though, the temperature is currently a rather chilly 4°C here in Edinburgh.

19°C and sunny but with high cloud creeping in from SW. Fairly breezy but nothing like the last few days.

Cloudy, dry and unusual for this year, the pleasant aroma of Petrichor in the air.

After the usual sunny start, it's now clouded over here in Edinburgh and this already means that won't be getting any of those impressive sunshine totals today which we've had over the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, the temperature has now recovered to around 14°C here in Edinburgh but with more cloud now around, it is now looking as though that could well scupper our chances of possibly seeing our first 20+°C maximum of the year today at Gogarbank although it's still going to end up fairly warm anyway.

Sunshine has extended later into the day than the GFS Op was suggesting; it's now 22°C here.

The odd large drop of rain here now. We reached 17 C in the sun earlier but down to 15 C now 🙄

I haven't been able to say this for a long time, but it's now raining here in Edinburgh as I write.

In addition to that, the temperatures are also refusing to rise and remain stuck at around 14°C here in Edinburgh.

With the general outlook now looking cooler and more changeable, could it be the case that we have now already had our "summer" for this year?

We had an early peak at 23.6C before it clouded over, so a diurnal range of 25.2C after the overnight low of -1.6C

The dry spell has finally broken here with steady rain, 1.6 mm so far but going to need a lot more than that to soak into the soil. This is after a fine and sunny day with a max of 18.6 C, went on a bike ride in morning then sat outside in front of west-facing house in afternoon.

Brightening up after earlier mist and fog. But look at the radar to the south. It's like waiting for snow in Winter but this time it will be the relief of the first decent rain this Spring. The BBC tell me in their pictorials that the rain will begin in earnest between 2 and 3pm and then go on for a few hours. Of course, once it starts, will it get stuck in a rainy rut for weeks on end?

Dry spells in the Spring are pretty common in this area although that is only going on memory. The damage this year was the wind which sucked the moisture out of the topsoil and quite a number of frosts.

The proper raindrops have delivered just under 5mm, so hardly a washout. And the 'heaviest' has gone over I think. Welcome rain but could do better. A lot better.

After a fair and bright day with a max of 20.7 C at 3.50 pm, the rain arrived by evening but it wasn't anything too dramatic - just a welcomed 8.8 mm. Currently partial cloud and clear breaks, 13.8 C & mid-80% H in calm air.
