8.8C sunny with some high cloud - and more than a dozen contrails, so much for a shortage of jet fuel.

8C sunny and calm with as many contrails as in Sussex coming from all over the place it seems.

A nip earlier with no doubt a roof/grass frost in favoured places.

Unlike yesterday, there's no easterly muck around this morning and there was even a bit of sunshine right from the word go. However, it's now generally mostly cloudy here in Edinburgh with only the odd occasional sunny interval and there was even a very light and brief passing shower of rain which only just dampened the ground and no more.

Last night was rather chilly for the time of year with an overnight minimum temperature of 5.23°C at the botanic gardens and 3.62°C at Gogarbank although it wasn't quite cold enough for a ground frost.

Currently around 7°C here in Edinburgh

No rain today, but we had a steady 40% of cloudy, squally periods when we half expected it. Pleasantly warm, 60% of the time.

Did anybody in the S.E actually get any rain from the passing showers? Nothing here of course. Current conditions are a thick layer of dust and pollen everywhere which is playing havoc with my eyes.

Wasn't expecting rain here but the dust and high pollen levels combined with a freshening north-easterly are not my idea of a comfortable Spring.

9.4C broken cloud, light easterly.

No showers here but MetO was reporting thunder and lightning somewhere in the SE?

Edit - there must have been about 0.1mm overnight which had to be looked for after I went to top up the bird table

the weather here in london with a few exceptions this spring has been stuck in a rut over the last few weeks with cold E NE winds prevailing

Today Tuesday 28 April for example it was it was 6 degrees  this  morning with a high windchill factor taken into account. THere has been a marked absence of SW winds during April. Any change on the horizon?

Sunny with still a brisk easterly wind but not as strong as yesterday evening. 10.6C

Interesting to note the line of showery rain on the radar to the SW. Even if it comes over the BH weekend, I'll be pleased if only to water the garden.

With a bit of luck there will be rain, and it'll fall overnight Sat/Sun

Only just completed it yesterday and today is about putting back the fixtures.

14.36 hrs of sunshine yesterday at Swanston and it should be the same today! Getting used to these warm, sunny and dry Aprils ☀️

A bit warmer today, we got 15 C yesterday and it's already 17 C up here away from the sea

In this city called Edinburgh where the Sun just refuses to stop shining these days, it is doing so yet again with barely a cloud to be seen, but there is also a noticeably cool breeze from off the North Sea despite weather forecasts suggesting that it would warm up with the Met Office even going for today to give us our first 20+°C maximum of the year here in Edinburgh.

That is clearly not going to happen though (at least not today) because after reaching around 16°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the latter part of this morning, the temperature has refused to rise any further since then and has even dropped back a bit since then, although it has now gone back to around 15°C at that particular station as I write.

Meanwhile at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, the temperature is still pegged back at around 13°C thanks to that cool breeze from off the North Sea.

Further to John's post above, we've had a sudden warming here! 15-16 C all afternoon with a steady and chilly NE wind.

At 1600, the wind fell light and veered SE, the shade temperature rose to 20 C as warmer inland air arrived. At Swanston to my south it rose to 20.2 C

I've known this happen before and it can be connected to the tides

It'll be interesting to see if Gogarbank, the Airport and the Botanics rise any further 🤔

As it turns out, today was actually our warmest day of the year so far but although we came very close in the end to getting our first 20+°C maximum of the year, that didn't quite happen, so the wait for that first 20+°C maximum of the year goes on.

For the record, today's maximum temperature as 19.81°C at Gogarbank and 19.41°C at the botanic gardens so although it was at Gogarbank where the higher of those two temperatures were recorded, the botanic gardens where it was much cooler earlier on, is therefore where that warm-up was more noticeable.

In addition to that, the two sunniest days of this month at Gogarbank have both been recorded in the last couple of days with 14.5 hours of sunshine being recorded there yesterday and another 14.4 hours of sunshine today.

The connection with the tides is interesting and for the record, the Moon is currently at its waxing gibbous phase with the next Full Moon coming up tomorrow at 6:23pm BST (17:23 UTC). With that will come the next spring tide as these occur around twice a month at around every New Moon and Full Moon although how high these tides are depend largely on how far away the Moon is from the Earth at that time, amongst other factors.

As I write, the next Lunar Apogee (when the Moon is farthest away from us) is on 4 May 2026 which is halfway between tomorrow's Full Moon and the following Last Quarter Moon. This suggests that the spring tide associated with tomorrow's Full Moon will be weaker than average, and getting weaker with each subsequent Full Moon after that. The stronger of the two spring tides just now is therefore coming with the New Moon with that continuing to gain strength every month before that eventually peaks during the summer.

There are a number of interesting sites which list the times of the high and low tides at Leith and Granton (my nearest station for that is actually at Granton as I only live just up the road a bit from there) which are listed as the main stations for that here in Edinburgh and whenever we are coming into the next spring tide prior to the next New Moon or Full Moon, high tide will generally occur in the early part of the afternoon in those locations. That was indeed the case today, so I will let you draw your own conclusions from that as to whether or not that might had anything to do with this afternoon's sudden rise in the temperature despite the wind still coming in from off the North Sea at that time.

However, this could also just be down to the high pressure changing its position a bit, therefore reducing the North Sea effect and that indeed, was something which was forecast to happen.

Having said that though, it has now cooled down a lot after sunset to around 10°C at the botanic gardens and just 8°C at Gogarbank.

A mild start at 15.1C. Cloudy and calm. The forecast for here tomorrow is bullish about rain developing and heavy at times too. 100% likelyhood. My garden will love it. Holidaymakers, perhaps not so much.
