Conclusion

January 2026 was a colder than average month here with a higher than average number of air frosts although most of the cold weather happened in the first half of the month. We didn't get any ice days though, there were no severely cold temperatures and we also virtually completely missed out on the snow which other parts of the UK were getting.

It was also a much drier than average month in terms of the actual rainfall amounts once again, but it was actually wetter than average in terms of the number of official rain days.

Finally, January 2026 got off to a very sunny start and although the second half of the month was much duller, the month as a while ended up slightly sunnier than average overall.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

4.4c for me, lowest minimum -6.1c and 3-4 days of lying snow where a dusting survived surprisingly well.

Rainfall wise it was 'very wet' with 164mm - that might be a slight under report as the rain gauge got gummed up and didn't record much of one of the heaviest rainfall days!

Continues a run of 3 January's that by recent standards are cold although 2 out of 3 would have been milder than average in the 60-90 dataset.
