As we are currently in yet another dry spell, this thread might not be all that busy for now but I have created it anyway just in case anyone has anything to report. As we are also in a relatively cold spell, there may be members who seen a little of rainfall which is fallen as snow, and any equivalent rainfall total for that can be reported on this thread as well.

If it gets milder next week though, it may well get wetter as a result, and this would result in this thread becoming busier.

Regardless of what happens though, this is the very place to record those all important rainfall totals for this month.

Up to 42mm for the month so far, with 10mm since midnight. The lawn (which I suspect is still frozen maybe a centimetre down) now has several long puddles on it, where the rain's unable to soak in so is just sitting there.

After 56.2mm rain 13th-16th January at the Chilgrove well, the groundwater level has risen 9.0m in the last 6 days, to 66m asl.

The chalk must be getting saturated. If we get the same amount of rainfall again by the weekend (not by any means impossible given the synoptics) that will bring the groundwater level up to its maximum 75m asl, at which point springs break out and flood the 'dry' valleys. At least there'll be no water shortage here this year.

EDIT: I notice that groundwater flooding is already happening further west in the Dorset Downs

Just totted up the total for this month so far.

134.5mm

Just back from Dorchester. My usual route to a supermarket Aldi in Weymouth has been closed since the beginning of the month (Wessex Water main replacement) so I've been assisting the partners at Waitrose improve their earnings. Apart from noticing the steep price difference between the two supermarkets, I spoke to one of the staff who said she'd come in from out of town earlier. The floods were notable she said. I suppose she's on chalk which means her area is saturated to the top. I won’t go to Tesco nowadays because it’s hard to reach and still sails close to sell by dates from what I’ve heard. COOP? well the prices are steep and on par with Waitrose but with less choice. There that’s got that rant out of the way.
