Ignore me. I'd not realised I hadn't changed the location back from looking at Buxton yesterday 😖

I quite understand why you need to bang this drum. I have a vested interest in that my daughter is in Falmouth. Back yesterday as far as I know.  Can I get hold of her today? I warned her before she left about this storm. Yea yea yea... Does a red warning send out one of those phone alarms? Probably does from what I've read.  I hope the her uni is on the ball too. And her housemates.

I'm sure (I hope) that your daughter will be safe and that her and her housemates will be avoiding the beaches/coast for the duration. It's a real case of hunker down and make sure you have candles, batteries, fully charged power banks/phones and blankets, in case the power goes out.

Odd there is no Amber warning areas, it goes straight from red to yellow which doesn't really make sense

Trace the max gusts modelled and you can see how the far South is now in play (accepting the central pressure is some 4mb higher than modelled but this isn’t going to make much difference).

Cornwall now under a red warning. I wonder what this event will end up being remembered for more? Destructive winds in the South West, or potentially disruptive snow across the Midlands and into parts of the North?

All the schools and offices have closed. Cornwall is used to wind ..just not horrible gusty back edge NWwinds.

It's so eerily still here in Epsom...I've footie training from 8-9pm and the BBC forecast seemed to show the winds for here would be pretty gusty by then.....just seems a world away currently.

Looking at the radar the rain is turning to snow at relatively low levels in south west Wales.

Although it's still heavy rain here.

Both the Met Office and BBC Weather are showing sleet mixed with the odd light snow symbol for this evening, so I'd say it's very touch and go as to whether it will happen here. The dew point on my weather station is currently 1.8°C and steadily falling, so who knows?

Be interesting to look at initial path of this storm compared to 87, looks very similar to then, just hope it doesn't behave as that one did and it stays south

The Met Office App has a mean wind speed of 70mph for St Mary's Airport with gusts to 94mph - I've never seen it that high.

My sister lives in Falmouth - she's used to a storm but said the mood down there feels different this time with everything closing early.

Additional - the classic S-K appearance prompted me to check the WV and there’s a lot of dry air being ingested right now with the hallmarks of a possible sting jet on the rear flank (in the area of the intense ppm band in the rear flank).

This reflects the wording in the Red warning of ‘rapid increase in winds’. The Channel Islands and the Brest Peninsula look right under the gun.

Normally in our SW'lies you might expect a 2x ratio, i.e. 20 to 40, but they look much higher in that NW'ly blast in the far SW - Penzance, for example, has 32 to 80, though Tresco on the Isles of Scilly has 66 to 90, a much lower ratio.

I can only guess it's a geographical quirk, but as was explained to me after 1987 by my school teacher that it's the ratio which enhances damage: 50 to 80 will cause less damage than say 30 to 75, as the impact of the individual gusts compared to the background wind is that much higher.
