Looking too little, too late to drop the CET far enough for those toward the lower end of the range of estimates for this month.

Still, I'm pleased that the theme of a more settled and colder final week or so has come through. Often the way that a pattern change is well anticipated but the finer detail lets me down 😆

Wishing everyone who celebrates it a marvellous (and hopefully much brighter than today) Christmas 🌲🎁

Unfortunately for me your maths are correct.

Dingle Rob will win by 0.01c if the December CET is 6.86c and 0.09c if its 6.9c or above.

Its looking that way now Rob, but your 6.9 prediction was a good one and had me worried for a time as i'd only covered the 5.1 to 6.8 range.

Still to be confirmed......

The Met Office have updated the December figures up to the end of the month on the detail CET pages

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/data/download.html

I get the mean CET for December to be 6.70C to 2 decimals based on (max+min)/2

Looks like RickM was nearest with 6.65 so well done him !

(lets hope the Met Office don't update them after publication like they did in November !)

According to my own tracking, everyone managed to beat the 1991-2020 average this year. It's total 'error' was 15.7°C, while the highest error among contestants was 13.72°C.

Simply predicting 1°C above the 1991-2020 average every month would have given you a total error of 9.62°C and 19th place on the leader board; only four contestants had a higher total.

Believe it or not, the Met Office changed the December figures after the data was issued yesterday

Like November it only affected the last day of the month where the Mean CET was upped from 0.8 to 1.0 and the Max CET upped from 4.1 to 4.5 with the Min CET left unchanged at -2.5

Luckily it does not make any difference to December's winner but for the competition calculation the December CET to 2 decimal places based on )Max+Min)/2 goes up from 6.70 to 6.71

Well the results are in and it's congratulations to Frank who, after a phenomenal performance all year, heads the table to take gold medal position closely followed by DingleRob snapping at his heels and GezM in a very respectable 3rd place. Frank there's a virtual crate of Moet on its way to you - Brian if you're reading this how about a free years membership for Frank?!

Congratulations also go to RickM who won this months competition - a sterling end to the year.

Lastly a cheer for WindyWillow who has this year's wooden spoon.

Thank you to all who took part and good luck in 2026 - those eagle eyed among you will have spotted that Frank is having a year off so it's all to play for!

P.s. Apologies for the wait - I wanted to make sure that there were no final revisions by the Met Office!
